Powdered Hair or not in the mid-18th century?

Hello, All! I am painting some mid 18th century regiments of Minden figures at present, and it just struck me that I do not know if I'm doing things correctly. Looking at various pictures & texts I cannot really discover if the foot & mounted OR's of the WAS/SYW era had their hair natural or powdere...

Re: 28mm Miniatures for Wars between 1735 - 1756

Hello, Günter. I wish you well with the Eureka figures. I have a unit of the Chevau Leger von Brühl from this range, as well as the Hussars, and also foot & mounted Arquebusiers de Grassin (sort of a must have unit for Old School Gamers :D ). These latter are in the WAS listing - you will have seen ...

Re: BLB2 in a campaign

Hello, Justin. I am really enjoying your recent posts, as I intend (hopefully in the not too distant future) to indulge in a similar imagi-nation campaign. (My last such escapade was a decade ago with 15mm Napoleonics!) Your battle report on Ottomans vs Swedes on your blog (I don't do Google ID, Fac...

Help with Osprey GNW Book

Gentlemen, Could I please direct you to Der Alte Fritz's posting in the Skane Wars section concerning assistance with getting votes on the Osprey website for a book on the GNW Swedish Army? As this Index appeals to a wider audience than the GNW, I hope you will assist our mates who favour the GNW by...

Re: Dutch Horse: A uniform query

Thanks, Tacitus. As my Swedish drinking mate down here in Australia says " We Swedes get around!" Weather report - 42.5 Celsius here yesterday, and thick smoke haze from bushfires 100km away = seems that it may be a good idea to get in touch with this mate for "a cleansing & cooling ale"!! :D...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

Greetings, Doug. Hall gives the following for the regiments you mention :- Navarre - he quotes 3 references - all agree on grey coat with grey linings/cuffs - 1 reference states red waistcoat (from contemprary record of 1698) another grey. The third does not refer to waistcoats. Yellow buttons. As a...

Re: Scottish uniforms

Hello, Mike. I would say that a "must have" reference for you is Stuart Reid's excellent book "I met the Devil & Dundee - The Battle of Killiecrankie 1689" printed by Partizan Press & available through Caliver Books http://www.caliverbooks.com/bookview.php?0e402b1d6db1ae5294f0a72ec6937081&id=15607 I...

Re: Source for WSS French Uniforms

Hello, Doug. As you appear to live in the USA, I would recommend you visit the "On Matters Military" webpage & click the Marlburian link http://onmilitarymatters.com/pages/dfcatalog.php?period=1710 You will see some great references there, especially Robert Hall's 3 CD-ROM's of French Army Uniforms....

Re: Dutch Horse,Uniform for Van Oyen Regiment?

Hello, Paul. The following is taken from the excellent CD ROM "Uniforms & Flags of the Dutch Army and The Army of Liege 1685-1715" by Robert Hall, Iain Stanford & Yves Roumegoux that I obtained from the great blokes at On Military Matters. Consistent with what Bob said, this reference shows that fro...

Re: Amazing Fact - Merry Christmas!

Congats to UK postage!! Their deliveries to the Antipodes have been a little erratic, though. I'm not sure if it is the 32 degree centigrade heat today, or just the time of the week, but it really does not feel much like Christmas here! Perhaps a rum ball & whisky may help! Anyway, .... MERRY CHRIST...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

Hello, Karamustafapasha. Like you, my principal interest is WSS, but Barry & others have been successfully widening my interest. :) I certainly would value an updated Nosworthy - the later 17th century has always been the "poor relation" to the popular ECW/30YW and WSS-SYW periods. My gut feeling is...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

Does this have anything on British cavalry tactics during this war? Hello, Kara! Greetings, all! I don't really know exactly as I've just started reading the book myself. From the chapter headings & a quick browse, I'm not sure if it goes down to the tactical level. It is different in style & conte...

Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

Hello, all. An item that may be of interest to some is that Professor John Child's book "The Nine Years War and the British Army 1688-1697: The Operations in the Low Countries" has been republished in paperback by the Manchester University Press. I received my copy from The Book Depository today. Th...
