Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

A long answer would require me to quote several pages from several books, and I don't want to get into trouble with Barry.. :D The short answer would be that deep into the 17th century the Dutch had three types of cavalry: the mounted arquebusiers, the "common" curassiers and the "appointed curassie...

Re: Child's book on British Army in the 9YW republished

According to "Vier eeuwen Nederlandse cavalerie", (Four Centuries Dutch Cavalry), by Lt-General J. Bartels, Vol I, p. 16, it was the Frisian Ritmeester (colonel of a cavalry regiment) of the Dutch States Army, Frederik Sirtema van Grovestins (1668-1750), who was the first to order his curassiers to ...

Re: Dutch at the Boyne

Flintlocks were known for quite a long time, and interesting enough the troops of the Dutch East Indies Company, VOC, were equipped with these rather modern weapons from the 1600's, at a time therefore when these weapons were not widely used in Europe. (Staat van Oorlog, M. de Jong, p. 146) The rath...

Re: North Star 1672 & Phoenix Miniatures

I wouldn't trust the dates on many images available on the NYPL site. I've found uniforms posted on the wrong periods and other dodgy information. Those uniforms are most likely from the previous decade as they look very typical of the early 1660's. The Dutch Army Museum site has a very good digita...

Re: Early Grenadiers

The Army of the Northern part of the Netherlands was called the States' Army, (an abbreviation of the "Army of the Estates-General of the United Seven Provinces", in dutch called "Het Staatse Leger"). In the States' Army grenadiers were introduced in 1670, the first grenadiercompany was founded in 1...

Re: Pikemen with tricorne hats?

The Rijksmuseum collection on their site is still daily growing and is very easy to use, I can't recommend it enough.

The lion flag is very probably a "generic" flag to show they are Dutch, like the fleur-de-lis for the French, or the Imperial Eagle for the Imperials.

Re: Pikemen with tricorne hats?

Dear Rudi,

If you go the Rijksmuseum site and start to search the collection with the word "Malplaquet", you will find a print by Jan Lansvelt from 1709 showing pikemen with floppy hats AND tricornes. So why bother... :-)

Re: Siege Warfare

Hi, From what I'm reading of the Franco-Dutch War most engagements were siege operations or related to them. I don't think this is quite true in my humble opinion. Sieges were an important part of the war but In the four northern Provinces there was an all out war on the Frisian Water defense line ...

Not much actually, as my Livonian is a bit rusty. The coloured plates of the siege of Naarden give away some clues, like the red hats.

Re: Kurland Regiments in Dutch Service

Plus of course the 1673 infantry regiment under Duke Fred(e)rik Kazimir (Cas/zimir) of Kurland/Coerland/Koerland. According to Ringoir he was appointed colonel 29th april 1673. "Het Staatsche Leger" writes in Volume V, p. 267: "The States made a capitulation deal with Frederik Casismir, son of the d...

Re: Franco-Dutch War 1672-78

As it was mainly a French-Dutch War most of the sources are either in French or in Dutch. As it was a propaganda war as well, contemporary works like paitings, pamphlets and books should be read with great caution. Most of the pamphlets can be found on the Dutch National Museum Site, www.rijksmuseum...
