Great Northern War Compendium

I got my copy and I think that it is the best introduction to the GNW in English, without question. It is two "coffee table" sized volume with over 600 pages in full color, with many hundreds of pictures and maps. Of course there are articles on the well-known battles, but also on many obscure ones....

Re: Russian standards...

I've not look at every Russian and Saxon flag in the Swedish trophy collection that is online, but of the many I have looked at none of the Russian flags have tassels, and neither to the Saxon ones. That does not mean that they could not have been removed after their capture, but there are other fla...

Re: GNW: Swedes and Russians use of the pike

The Saxons, Danes and Prussians did not carry pikes, although I believe that the Danish infantry was supposed to have been equipped with pikes late in the war. They did not have them at Gadebusch or Helsingborg. The Polish infantry was usually involved in garrison duty and rarely, if ever, was invol...

Re: GNW: Swedes and Russians use of the pike

I believe that Tacitus has a post somewhere here on this forum that says that the Russian regulations that were in effect in 1708 provided that every other man in the first rank was to be a pikeman. Since there were four ranks, this means that one in eight were pikemen. I believe that Tacitus says t...

Of course, at Gunter has mentioned previously, there is
also "Das Kursächsische Heer im Dreißigjährigen Krieg" which is spectacular.

Re: Swedes for BLB

A full strength indelta battalion would have about 600 men, usually in four ranks. A full strength indelta cavalry company (sometimes called a squadron) had about 125 men. A BLB Swedish "squadron" of two stands should represent about 250 men, probably in three ranks. This squadron's frontage would b...

Unfortunately, many ranges seem to leave the cavalry until last, which tends to make customers nervous about investing in the range, which in turn makes the manufacturer nervous about investing in more releases.....

That's been the problem with GNW dating back to the Foundry range.

Re: When did the danes start to use the tricorne

While Warafare figures are perfectly fine for the NYW, they don't have double-breasted coats. As far as the tricorne is concerned, my guess is that it was gradually introduced in the early 1700s.

With respect to flags, the Warfare shop has scores of them for the 9 Years War and the Great Northern War.
