Re: Danish Foot at Aughrim

It's getting interesting.... As I wrote earlier, hope to try to get some concrete numbers and names down in the next few days, but would counsel anyone not to rely on a single source - my own book included. Clarence, nice quotes from Kjeld's book - but go back to p.194 and the question of casualties...

Re: Danish Foot at Aughrim

Came a bit late to the thread, but will recheck my original notes for you - That said given "real world" commitments it may be a number of days rather than hours - that said I don't think the thread will disappear that quickly. Few quick points though - Marburg is useful but not infallible, language...

Re: French Battalions in Ireland...

Mark (Graf), Ramillies is now up on the Osprey website with the actual cover art, so you can see one of Seán's colour plates - This one is from the latter part of the battle when Hay's (Scots Greys) and Ross's (Royal Irish) dragoons barrel into the rearmost battalions of the Régiment du Roi as they ...

Re: French Battalions in Ireland...

Well, am now in the final proof reading of the manuscript and hope to "sign it off tomorrow, so "Ramillies" should be hitting the shelves before the end of October. Just hope it is well enough received to encourage the next two in the series, although that said I have a few other projects bubbling a...

Doubt if I'd be able to make it, but give me enough lead time and I'll help with any background info as required....

Re: Aughrim Book and Jacobite Grenadiers Question?

Exactly my point - The Regiment of the Lord Grand Prior (Henry Fitzjames) was one of the pre-1689 regiments, Fitzjames being appointed de jure colonel (with Nicholas Fitzgerald as Lt Colonel) upon King James' arrival from France. - Mike PS When I get time, will try to dig out which regiment this is ...

Re: Aughrim Book and Jacobite Grenadiers Question?

That's exactly it - The T&OE stated that the 13th company should be equipped as grenadiers but the obvious equipment shortages meant that this would never occur in every regiment. Unfortunately there no known listings of which regiments did or did not have grenadiers, although a useful rule of thumb...

Re: French Battalions in Ireland...

Graf (2), BTW your post endorses what I wrote in both the "Boyne" and "Aughrim" - when the French went into major production mode, the uniforms were almost all produced in gris-mêle with red distinctions, and so if anyone painting late period jacobites* has any questions as to uniform colours, that'...

Re: French Battalions in Ireland...

Graf, no problem - those were just a few things that I dug out in a "creative pause" from my slaving away on the manuscript for my latest Osprey. Thing is I can most likely give you chapter and verse on the French regiments and the senior officers, but it'll take a bit of time and that's a bit slack...

Re: French Battalions in Ireland...

La Marche - Armand-Charles de Gontaut, Marquis de Biron (1663-1756). Married to de Lauzun's niece, he will later be raised to the Dukedom and Marshal of France under Louis XV. Will command the French vanguard at Oudenaarde. Zurlauben - Béat-Jacques de la Tour-Châtillon, Comte de Zurlauben (1656 - 1...

Re: Tangiers question

Ray, if you want a history of the place under British rule, then the best two are Tangier - England's Lost Atlantic Outpost by Routh which was published in 1912 (by far the #1) and then Smithers' Tangiers Campaign. Corbett's England in the Mediterranean is also a vintage work, but also has some usef...
