Karolinska krigares dagböcker jämte andra samtida skrifter

This collection of Swedish soldiers diaries, letters and other documents was collected in the early 1900s and runs to 12 volumes. It is in Swedish and to make matters more difficult for non-Swedish speakers the spelling is somewhat archaic, but it is a major primary source for historians of the GNW....

Battle of the Bulge

Not sure if the image will come up, but on my trip to Europe over the last month, I went to the very spot where the Battle of the Bulge began. There is a memorial stone on the German/Belgian border where the 277 VGD hit the 3rd battalion of the of the 393 US Infantry Regiment, 99th US Infantry Divis...

Re: Swedish Dragoon standards

No doubt they had drummers, but Barry asks a good question. Where were the drummers when the actual fighting began? It seems that a drum would be pretty useless in a charge and would be an actual impediment to a man attempting to use his sword. Perhaps they stayed behind the squadron. Kettle drummer...

Re: Swedish Dragoon standards

I certainly hope Clarence does so!

The Life Dragoon, the Bremen and the Verden regiments and maybe Shlippenbach's together would make a perfect sheet.

Re: TRumpeters Banners

For the gentlemen's regiments they were probably usually in the livery colors of the colonel-proprietor with the colonel's coat of arms. The Royal regiments probably had banners that were like their standards.

Barry,

I could ask the same question about the Swedish horse, but I will wait to ask you in person on Thursday!

Others will no doubt chime in, but the Danes had flintlocks and no pikes.

Re: My Review of the great northern war compendium

According to Oscar Sjostrom's meticulously researched book on Fraustadt, there were 6500 prisoners from the Saxon army. 2400 prisoners who were "Bavarian," Swiss and French entered Swedish service. This of course was a common practice at the time. Many of these served at Kaliscz, where most of the s...

Re: Russian Swedish standards

I believe that in both armies, the white color was carried by the first, or as the Swedish termed it, "livbattalion." Pretty sure there was only one livfana per regiment.

Re: Torn

I agree with Barry. I have two battalions of Russians painted as Saxons. By switching out the command stand, I can also use them as red-coated Russians. While I don't believe there were any field actions where Russian, Saxon and Danish troops fought together, the three armies worked in concert in 17...
