Re: Follow-up to Question About Irish Regiments

Bill,

mea culpa - "King's" is Dongan/Nugent; "Queen's" is Carroll's.

So more digging to do on my part....

Apols,

Mike.

Re: Follow-up to Question About Irish Regiments

Just to add to the last - "Royal" at least initially would not have meant that they received uniforms with the usual distinctions. When Mountcashel went to France, his troops handed over their red coats in expectation of receiving new ones. What they received was standard French kit and when a compl...

Re: Follow-up to Question About Irish Regiments

Bill, firstly would agree totally with your comments on the Allen articles - No matter how much I'd like to see them once it leaves a small circle it becomes a matter of entering the copyright minefield, so best left alone. As for the Queen's dismounted dragoons (and indeed the whole army in exile) ...

Re: Flintlocks or Matchlocks for the boyne?

Dave, I'll re-check Walton for you but he is quite clear on this. Cost doesn't necessarily mean the physical cost of the weapons but also current and future upkeep. It could easily be that the weapons were expensive and unwieldy so they went back to what they knew best and then when the flintlocks w...

Re: JamesII Irish Footguards Uniforms

Barry, no problem. Basically you will see from the various quotes that all agree that the effective regimental colour for the guards is a white field with a red cross of St George and that any form of ornamentation is placed in the centre of the cross. Stevens (again quoted) who saw the flag close u...

Re: Robert Hall plates for the period

Unfortunately it's time to do a Samuel Pepys, and tomorrow I'll expand on the Kirke's question that seems to be dominating this thread. But first something for "Diomedes" and Barry. Yes, the illustration of a "Third Captain's Colour" for Kirke's regiment as it appears in my book on Aughrim is incorr...

Satire

Obviously it's clear that for whatever reasons Iain and the Forum have parted ways and the thread that formed part of the break-up has been closed, but I can't help thinking that somewhere someone hasn't got the joke. Iain's tag-line was Daniel Defoe's comment about Blenheim. And indeed Defore was m...

Re: Help Needed On A Couple Of Irish Regiments

You have to follow back the lineages and see which the original regiments were - Note that the colours and standards of the Army in Exile bear no resemblance to that of the units assimilated into the French Army. Basically - and you shouldn't denigrate O'Callaghan, which is a brilliant source as lon...

Re: Irish Brigade Grenadier headgear?

As Arthur says they followed the French. It's even unsure as to whether in Ireland or even up to the dissolution of the Army in Exile as to whether or not "Grenadiers" were more of a title rather than a description of function.

Re: Officers sash colors in Ireland

Basically what Ray says, also no chance of English officers wearing orange.
Their loyalty want to the Crown of England, not the States General.

Remember, William was joint monarch on sufference only and even later throughout his sole reign he was more tolerated rather than accepted.

Re: JamesII Irish Footguards Uniforms

Interesting. I note that in other posts on the forums we are enjoined by Barry as, in his reply to "Diomedes" to enter into lively debate because..."This is exactly the kind of reasoned and evidence based argument that I really cherish on this forum. You have cited sources for your point of view and...

Re: Flintlocks or Matchlocks for the boyne?

Toad, the first question is are you dealing with the Irish campaign as a whole or is your interest specifically the Boyne ? As rules of thumb: Dutch - GdV flintlock, majority of the others are in transition between the two systems. You must take into account that just because the Powers that Be dict...
