Re: Huguenot Officers

This was the regiment of dragoons commanded by Marquis de Miremont. It came into existence around 1690, and was formed mainly in Swiss from amongst Huguenot refugees residing there. The regiment was paid for by the Dutch Republic. The regiment served in Piedmont and Savoy, and somewhere in 1695 came...

Re: Huguenot Officers

Good question. My understanding is that the origin of rank and file mattered not that much, even less than that of the officers. Only in 1698 the whole question of 'Brits-only-in-our-regiments' started to play a role. The Journal of the House of Commons is full with requests for naturalization. Howe...

Re: Huguenot Officers

I don't know for sure, but when in doubt I usually go with the colors appropriate for the government that paid the "foreign" regiments. Off the top of my head I don't recall if the Huguenots were in English or Dutch pay, or a combination. The Huguenots that were formed into three regiments of foot ...

Re: french horse at the Boyne

This regiment of Huguenot horse, was the regiment of the Duke of Schomberg. Schomberg was of course killed at the Boyne, and was succeeded by the future Earl of Galway. It was raised in England in March 1688, with eight troops. Most officers were Huguenots who had some to England with William of Ora...

Re: Tangier 1683

hi Dave, I don't have names of the captains of the three Spanish troops, and no not more that these troops served in Tangier between 1680 and 1684. Googling on 'spanish horse tangier 1680' gives several hits, but haven't searched them all. Perhaps they were hired, to replace the three English troops...

Re: Tangier 1683

hello Redmist, As for the troops as Tangier: In 1661 and early 1662, four regiments of foot were shipped to Tangier, together with a troop of horse. Three of the regiment came from the Dunkirk garrison: one was an old Protectorate regiment and two were Royalist regiments, predominantly Irish. The ot...

Re: Malplaquet allied victory!

Though I am not into wargaming myself, I find the observations you put forward interesting. Many years ago I played a computer game related to the battles of Quartre-Bras and Waterloo (it was called Fog of War or something, it was pretty detailed regarding orbats). Playing with the French, it was so...

Re: information on Portuguese regiments

All, Whilst exploring other sources for information on Portuguese regiments, this seems to be really a tough nut to crack and the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 will not have helped, I have obtained a copy of Dorrel's book on the campaign in Spain in 1710. As Maciek wrote, this book is pretty well writte...

Re: information on Portuguese regiments

@Motorway Thank you for the link. Looks like an interesting project, and hope they will include more than just a database of names. I have seen similar projects on the www, and sometimes they tend to focus on names only and provide little context. @karamustafapasha Thank you for the book title. Wien...

information on Portuguese regiments

dear all, I am looking for detailed information on Portuguese regiments during the War of the Spanish Succession. I am in possession of Pat Condray's booklet from Editions Brokaw from 1992, but that doesn't provide the information I am looking for. What I am looking for are basically, short, regimen...

Re: Introductory Reading for WSS

Hi, http://www.spanishsuccession.nl/ gives a decent introduction to, and overview of, the War of the Spanish Succession. Even the Wikipedia entry of the conflict is pretty decent. If you look for a good book, I am afraid there is no real decent English language book on war of the Spanish Succession....

Re: British Army in the Nine Years war

hello Maciek, A pretty good review is found here: http://internationalhistory.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/book-review-of-the-nine-years-war-and-the-british-army-1688-1697-the-operations-in-the-low-countries/ Whether the book is a 'must' have depends of course on ones particular interests and points of ...

Re: British Army in the Nine Years war

If this is a reprint of Childs' book on the British army during the NYW, judging from the title, it will be the one on the operations in the Low Countries. This book is a must have! Also recommended are Childs' books on the British Army of William III (difficult to find), and on the Williamite War i...

Re: Anglo-Dutch Cavalry Brigades

hi Mark, For the NYW, the Dutch Garde te Paard fought in Ireland, and stayed in England until 1699. The English Royal Regiment of Horse did practically the same. As for the Life Guards, the Dutch troop is found listed together with the English troops in Flanders. So, yes, probably they were brigaded...

Re: The Dutch Blue Guard and a Papal Banner..

I think professor John Childs, chronicler of the post Restoration ''British army'', put it right by saying that William did not gamble with the whole of his political and military future in both the United Provinces and Europe to rescue the protestant religion in England out of philanthropic conside...
