Re: Dutch Grenadiers

If memory serves me well, the only known grenadier cap for the Dutch in for the Friesham regt, see below, all the other are pure guess work! Ray, The article Motorway mentioned earlier in the thread describes at least 5 other known Dutch grenadier cap/hat types (some surviving in British museums). ...

Re: Dutch Grenadiers

Hi, Dutch grenadiers wore a variety of headgear. The grenadier hat as seen in the Foundry and Front Rank ranges and shown as THE Dutch grenadier hat is in fact just one of many variants. (It was depicted by Romeyn de Hooghe on a 1690 plate of Het Loo palace). Only the Garde te Voet grenadiers wore a...

Re: Swiss in Dutch Pay and Ansbach

For Rechteren, I have not found any info on the flags. The plain style of that makes me slightly dubious as the vast majority of Dutch flags have intricate detailing on them as shown on Waes. However, the regiment was raised in the Overijssels area with Zwolle being the central town (capital) of th...

Re: Gardes te Voet

The Dutch foot guards wore dark blue coats faced orange during William's reign, probably because this colour scheme reflected the arms of the house of Orange. The variations in the facing colour are probably due to the fact that late 17th century dyes were not fast and would rapidly fade from expos...

Re: Common mistake on illustration of Danish flags

Indeed Ben, For instance, when a colour was lost and a new one hastily ordered, quality did not count. Local, on-site manufacturers were hired instead of specialized workshops and artists. A good publication which shows the quality difference between flags is ”In Hoc Signo Vinces”, available in the ...

Re: Common mistake on illustration of Danish flags

Gents, There's an abundance of (pictorial) info for those who search in other languages than English. Regarding this specific discussion I would like to point you to the Statens Trofésamling of the Armémuseum in Stockholm. Amongst others it contains many Danish flags from the 17th & 18th centuries t...

Re: Royal Irish Grenadier Caps

Flag information well again there is nothing left in existance so it is a guessing game and unless you have a time machine I'd like to know what you would do??? Have you tried the works of Belaubre and De Wilde? Their series "Les armees qui combattirent Louis XIV" contain a lot of flag information....
