Requesting good biographies

Post by Steven Yeowell » Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:30 pm

Hi everybody,

Recently finished Corelli Barnett's biography of Marlborough - my first reading on the period which I enjoyed so much I registered to this forum!

So I'm casting around now for good biographies on other major figures of the period 1660 - 1714. Could anybody recommend suitable reading on Charles II, James II, William III, Queen Anne and Louis XIV? I'd prefer popular history to anything too academic.

Cheers,

Steve Y.

Shadow of a Crown?(or throne) Merriol Trevor.. Biog of James II. I liked it although I heard it described once as pro Jacobite fantasy... but that was by a Williamite!

Try Louis XIV by Phillipe Erlanger. Big paperback but an interesting read.
The edition I have was published by Phoenix Pres in 2003 and was bought for £12.99 in 2005.
