The Sound of the Guns

Post by Liam A of E » Thu Apr 10, 2008 9:01 am

A light hearted post this.
:P

Do you chaps paint with background music, or a zen like silence, with the odd thumb cymbal?

If you do listen to music, what is your preferred choice and why?

I am expecting an eclectic mix of responses, from the Master and Commander soundtrack, through Rammstein to Lilliburlero and the Hohenfriedberger...............But no Phil Collins, please.

This could be a career defining moment Liam

I like to constantly rerun old movies that I have seen at least 20 times each on a small DVD player. Often I will just leave the same movie on repeat and watch it two or three times in a row  I obviously don't actually watch them I just like the sound of the dialogue and a few favourite scenes. So, my list not exhaustive but extensive:

Carry On Series boxed set (all 30 of them)
Scream Trilogy
Pink Panther Series
Frost
Inspector Morse Series
Kelly's Heroes
Still Game (All 5 series)
Dear Green Place (6 episodes)
LA Confidential
Film Noir of any other variety

Best your surprised at the lack of WAR stuff

I do a lot of my painting with one or more friends over. We don't have any music on, but do end up discussing a lot of painting techniques and other gaming and historical subjects.

I like to paint while listening to talking books.

The main ones being;

The Flashman Papers (unabriged versions) George MacDonald Fraser

Quatered Safe Out Here G M Fraser THE best military biography, and with a nice passage from a Scot that shows mutual love and respect between the Scots and English!!!

Treasure Island quite a gruesome book really.........

To Kill a Mockingbird read it at school....still love it!

Sceptured Isle Lots of them.........

Any Conan Doyle.

And more Flashman. But read them also as you get the historical notes!

Very sad that G M Fraser passed away in the new year.........

Hi Liam,

Left the specs down the road, so forgive any mus-spelling = HIC

Apart from bagpipes, one in particular comes to mind,
ORFF = CARMEN BARUNDA = even the kids like it. Even have a copy for long road trips with them in the car.

Now, guess where I heard that music :?: :?: :?: (apart from the Charge on Fort Wagner)

Warmest regards and best wishes

Guess I better - my soul also. I find whats "on" is important for my concentration.

TV - documentaries, or films I have seen loads of times, so I dont actually have to watch!

Music - My joy is my ipod - I have made up a few playlists for paiinting to suit the mood Im in. so "War against the French" list has Master and Commander, Sharpe, etc. "Ye Goode Stuffe" has Mediaeval Babes and Name of the Rose, and my preference for British composers - Walton, Elgar, Vaughn Williams, all good. I listen to a lot of soundtracks, not just warry ones, Hammer Horror music is tops - and then of course my mainstay of Black Sabbath and Led Zep.

Im finding Tom Waits is actually good for the concentration, slow steady beats, very chilled.

Dont try Glasgow Band Mogwai, they are very good, but have a habit of going from very calm to very very loud, which plays havoc with lace painting when you jump.

Like the first time I listened to Tubular Bells, was drifting off into a dream..... until Mike Oldfiled said "Piano", and I almost soiled my trousers.

Talking books are something I havent tried, but seem a good call, as do Carry On Films, although I dont know how I would stop the uncontrollable giggles when I hear "Infamy, Infamy, they've all got it in for me"......

Depends like the movies, or the music ( Beowulf at the moment) but I've also developed a taste for the audio books. The Emperor Series by Conn Iggulden are particulalry good especially when painting ancients, get loads done.

Anything to keep me motivated, Waterloo still takes some beating, know most of the soundbites now.
Sad or what!!!!!!!

I must just add, on the subject of Talking Books ... my all time favourite author PG Wodehouse... anything read in the unabridged format by Jonathan Cecil...
What ho Jeeves
Jeeves in the Offing
Joy in the Morning
etc
etc

As Bertie would say..

More on the talking books.........

The M R James ghost stories..........especially the ones narrated by Sir Michael Hordern. Although not recommended on long night shifts when 'working' for the goverment!

The unabridged Spike Milligan war memories. The funny voices and even funnier stories (silence when you talk to an officer!) come close to beating even Carry Ons.

I remember a conversation with the late Paul Trickett where he had to stop painting for a few hours because of listening to said stories.

If anyone tries them out and wants to know the precise spot, it's the bit when the gunners are on a night time O. P. in Italy. They have to keep quiet but the (typically British Army) round drum on a square spindle keeps clanking.............

John Buchan Hannay is great.

Kiplings army or India stuff.

Oh yes, and Flashman...................breaking wind setting off the Charge of the Light Brigade!

I find now that i never listen to music whilst painting. Some of the longer unabridged types you van really get lost in. Sadly, my wife has found me in the early dawn still listening and painting a number of times!
