Cranky Scotsmen

Post by CoffinDodger » Tue Nov 24, 2009 1:40 pm

Gentlemen.

I've just read Barry's article in the latest issue of WARGAMES Illustrated on the various PitAs encountered throught his wargaming life. It should be set as recommended reading. It also contains a photo of the man himself posing with arms extended in supplication as in some of the early Christian icons of Saints whose patience is being tried by all and sundry.

Look carefully at his left hand. I know he takes his hobby seriously but, the Stigmata?

Seriously though, great article.

Looking forward to it. Might have to try to sneak a copy early instead of waiting for tomorrow.

oh dear... it's out then...

I fully expect a fatwah from the Many Headed as a result of this little piece but I think those who are used to my writing style will recognise that my tongue was placed somewhere in my cheek when scribbling(but not totally)

To be honest there is a lot of coverage of the FoW Vietnam stuff. Maybe a little more FoW than they originally promised. I hope that this hasn't set a precedent.

Cheers,

Darrell.

I've always loved WI and still subscribe to it. I will say I am not a large fan of FOW. Great figures/models, good rules for competition games, interesting scenarios and in a nice package. That said we dont use them but I applaud their efforts to get players into the genre'. Did anyone think that the moment they bought WI it wasn't going to slowly turn to FOW Illustrated? I do hold out hope it won't and only time will tell.

As long as Barry uses it as his platform for his creations I will continue to subscribe.

In fairness to the new owners of WI, a magazine is only as good as it's contributors (Barry!) and I suspect when those inevitable months come along when they're a bit short of variety to fill the mag - the FoW staff writers will take up the slack.

So I fully expect (and don't really mind) the odd FoW dominated issue - I just hope it doesn't become the norm, rather than the occasional 'lapse'.

I play FoW but, about 80% of this month's magazine was devoted to the subject and I sincerely hope that this will be the exception rather than the rule. If the magazine becomes unbalanced, it will gradually lose support unless Battlefront Miniatures wish to go the way of Games Workshop and start opening FoW stores up and down the country. I don't know if that would be a good thing or not.

Bloody hell lads its only one issue.I found the Vietnam stuff pretty well done, as is the rest of the magazine. Battlefront have stated that this is a one off.
Wargamers must be the most cynical bunch ever.
There are articles on AWI and of course by Harry Bilton.

I was totally unaware that they were going to move into Vietnam as a product range... interesting...
I think like any good commercial organisation Battlefront now have their eye on the big prize... The US market. The mag is taking on much more of an international feel and is losing the quaint parochialism of a British publication.
I do not object to this but it is definitely the end of an era.

Gone are the days of a pint and a Chinese meal with DMacF in Newark whilst we chatted over the next article... aaah

An international gaming mag is probably long overdue and a positive development. Many mags have failed to create that bridge and universal appeal.

All power to the 'slick', professional, value for money WI!

Hi,
don't worry, they arn't moving into this in a big way. I think its more they had an interesting idea and had the good sense to bring it out just before Christmas.

Also its a good variation on the basic FOW set up. A lot of fun to play.

Trust me BF will be back to the usual WWII stuff soon enough.

Don't worry Barry..errI mean Adolf, all good Scottish heroes go into hiding at some point in their heroic lives before comming out stonger and better to lead their men forward into battle and victory  ...er, oh yeah, you always lead yours from the back and not often to victory I've been informed:twisted: One day you will be martyred...once you've gone through the process of being hung, drawn & quartered by those backbacking rule/history knowitalls you've slated.

However I did enjoy the article and using that figure to symbolise uncompleted ranges did make me smile - a lot (it won't make HIM smile me thinks?), in fact it was the first article I read, well actually it was the first non-FOW related article I came to
