1704 Battalion guns uniforms?

Post by dab » Sat Jan 28, 2012 9:33 am

Hi :)
Was the Battalion guns crew by Artillery men in Artillery uniforms or of the colours of the regiment uniform ?
From my books Dutch Drummers Frequently wore reverse coat and lining colours in 1704, is this correct ? which regiments did not follow this rule?
Did this rule cover the nine year war too ?
Thanks
David

I would be interested to know about Battalion guns as well, though I would assume that most of the labour would be provided by troops drafted from the regiment & be in regimental uniform or some variation of it, what uniform the gun captain & his assistants wore is unknown to me & I would not know where to start working out a probable one.

 I had read that thread too silly me

my assumptions are that the only "mobile" guns where the few remaining gallopers & those where possessed of small crews & of very small calibres 1-2lb & going out of fashion as they where not that useful being too small to cause much damage. Other than that Guns had small trained crews & a lot of Labour either civilians or I would suppose borrowed form any avalible regiment. As an aside This is the superstition for French taking several companies of militia with them in my imaginary side show of the nine years war. All artillery train personnel where civilian carters as far as I am aware.

It really wasn't until the Seven Years War that battalion guns were the standard ploy. Even in the War of Austrian Succession we see light guns 2-6 lb brigaded together in batteries. Fontenoy is a good example as most of the light guns of both sides were used for this purpose. Of course it could also be argued this was just for this set piece battle and not entirely practiced across the whole of the period. See Rays post above about the carriages as well.

we now return to our regularly schedule program. "Uniform colors of civilian gunners in 1704" :)

By following these tread, it seems that a Artillery Uniform was more common with the Eastern and Southern European Empires than with the gloryfied Western wargoing nations  You will find Regular Artillerists manning "Regimental"-Guns in Russia, Saxony/Poland and Austria/Hungaria.

Does this mean the "East" were more developed in the use of Artillery then the "West" :?:

Saxon:
Headgear: a black hat trimmed with yellow lace, later a tricorne.
Coat: gray with red cuffs, lining and possibly a collar.
Buttons: brass buttons.
Kamisol: probably red.
Breeches: leather.
Stockings: red.

Russia:
Like Russian Infantry but Red coat with blue cuffs (black in 1731).

Austria:

and

„Macht Euch Euren Dregg alleene“

"Sort your filth out by yourself!" The King of Saxony Friedrich August III., at his abdication 1918, referred to the quarrels in the parliament and the squabbling within the provisional government.

Thanks for the link Ray
it has brought up a problem ?
(3pdr long barrel) in Red (Dutch), where Dutch guns "RED"
The information i have, said they are blue ?
Which is correct ? since i have not finished painting the artillery guns
The correct information would be great
Don't wan't to give Dave Knight the wrong colour guns.
Thanks

Hi

Link to photos of what is said to be a WSS French 3 pounder. Interesting to see how small the gun and its carriage is. Hardly coming up to the person in the photo's waist. I would imagine that a gun like this would be very easy to move round a battlefield compared to the bigger guns. The French did not have battalion guns during this period.

If the practice of this period is similar to 7YW. Then battalion guns if they existed would generally have been brigaded together into small batteries of 4-6 guns crewed by a mixture of specialist artillarymen and infantrymen from the parent units with the grunt work being done by the
infantrymen (I would imagine that the guns would operate at a brigade rather than a battalion level i.e. 1 gun per 3-4 battalions).

With a gun as small as this you could imagine the crews just picking the gun up and carrying it forward, or dragging it along with ropes.
