Uniforms of the Retreat from Moscow, 1812, Worth buying?

Post by Atheling » Wed Aug 07, 2013 7:56 am

Hi all,

A friend of mine has offered me a copy of Uniforms of the Retreat from Moscow, 1812, Philip J. Haythornthwaite which I'm thinking of buying as I plan to do a Retreat from Moscow skirmish demo at some point soon and i was wondering if any of you could let me know how useful it might be?

I would be curious to know how that title differs from the earlier Uniforms of Napoleon's Russian Campaign, also by P. Haythornthwaite, illustrated by Mike Chappell, published in 1976 by Blandford Press.

I had the Russian campaign book Greystreak refers to. It's plates were good and I remember figures wearing furs and blankets which surely formed references for the recent perry sculpts.

However they are just that, figures wearing furs and blankets, scarves and strips of cloth over or in place of their uniform. Perhaps a specialist reference book on this may not be required?

„Macht Euch Euren Dregg alleene“

"Sort your filth out by yourself!" The King of Saxony Friedrich August III., at his abdication 1918, referred to the quarrels in the parliament and the squabbling within the provisional government.

Guys the book arrived and to my eyes at least there are a lot of uniforms to absorb and a few very nice pics of the French retreating.

Should be a great start   .
