The pictures are amazing, I know that the Austrians are only there because the're on a world tour, but the Cuirassier are quite fantastic.

Although most of the re enactors look like retired civil servants the overall feeling in the air is quite special. To see troops in uniform inside La Haye Sainte, to watch British infantry practising their drill on the position of the 52nd or come across a marching column of the Old Guard coming down a country lane(led by fifers and drummers) is hard to put into words. I have spent a lifetime trying to imagine what that would really look like and transfer that vision onto the tabletop.. now it is right before my eyes. Mission Accomplished.. I can give up gaming now.

It's when you see a well done, large scale re enactment that you realise just how difficult it is to move large bodies of troops, never mind try and co ordinate them. even the slightest ditch, stand of trees, dip in the ground or hedge completely throws folks off . It must have
been a nightmare pushing troops forward. I know when we were at Appomattox last year there was a large body of rebs being led by Longstreet. when they started coming over the hill there didnt seem to be that many. Because they were echeloned though there tuned out to be hundreds! just because of a fold in the ground.

I remember seeing a Sealed Knot reenactment of Dunbar many years back and the large regiments looked splendid until they were ambushed by a tree. Trying to get the pike block around that tree was hilarious, God knows what it would have been like in real life with people shooting at you and friends wounded and dying around you.
I had a few experiences myself when I used to do a bit shooting.
We were doing a walked up shoot traversing through woods in a line which resembled a skirmish line and it was amazing how often we had to stop and re line because the outside shooters kept swinging in and threatening the other guns.
