Pipers and Khaki in the Second Anglo-Afghan War

I've not had much luck getting an answer to these questions.

Does anybody know how a Highland Regiment differed in organization from a standard line infantry one? Were pipers recognized as music, or were they still carried on as infantrymen, not musicians? Did each company have a piper, or were they grouped with the battalion HQ?

Second, did the pipers retain their green tunics, or did they wear khaki like the rest?

I've just purchased a bunch of North West Frontier Highlanders. The only piper I have on hand is from Foundry's Zulu War line, and he is available because at the time he was too much trouble to paint! He is in the official uniform coat with cuff lace. I'd prefer not to have to modify him with a dremel if I didn't have to.
