We played 27 turns of the Battle of the Alma using R2E with the Crimean modifications.
Pleased to say it ran very well with few if any glitches.

To get an impression of the scale we had
12 players
A table wich was about 28 feet wide by around 18 feet deep at some points.

We used over 3,000 models including two in scale ships of the line.

Great feel and very enjoyable. I must get round to the pdf

28 feet by 18 feet!!!!!!!!???

Good Lord, you are rapidly becoming the Cecil B DeMille of wargaming Barry!

A massive set; a cast of thousands in period costume – AND full scale ships to boot!

Have you started planning ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ yet?

(Actually, come to think of it, 'Barry Hilton's Ten Commandments' has more of a ring to it :D )

Barry,

How long did it take to do all 27 turns?

The game was late starting on the Saturday morning and didn't get going until about 10.40 stopped for a bit lunch about 1 then gamed on until about 7. We then carried on in various states of hangover about 10am on the Sunday morning another break for lunch then called it a day about 3pm. Considering most of the players had only ever had one game with the rules and that had been a year ago, the amount of lead on the table and some of the distances to cover I thought we did quite well. Probably would have got even more in if it wasn't for the 'Angus' factor.
Cheers
Dave

Having lionised Mr Hilton in my previous post, and having visited some parts of this forum I seldom go, I now realise the Oscar should have gone to Bob (thinredline) :D

(Really looking forward to seeing some pictures of this game)

I'm still trying to get over the shock of Mr O'Brien posting a link to the game report on PMT  And yes I did put a nice comment on.

I noticed the Allies seemed to be in units of 24 for the infantry, what unit sizes were the Russians as we at our club are always "discussing" actual size of Russian battalion's in the Crimea for wargame purposes in relation to the Allies and I was just wondering what others do?

And on another point Dave, have you seen the new Osprey Garibaldi yet, very nice, might inspire you get those plastic ACW types converted??

Cheers

Stuart

PS Are Aly and Dave still planning to do their Crimean game at Sept Partizan?

I haven't seen the Garibaldi book Stuart and didn't even know they were producing one but thanks for letting me know, I'll look out for it at Claymore.

It's a funny coincidence you asking about the Crimean game in September as Aly had just been on the phone asking about our weekend game and confirming that their game is still going ahead and I've been twisting his arm about producing the Turks.

I think Bob made up the orbats at a 1:30 ratio instead of the usual 1:20 that we normally use in R2E so using that scale I think the Russian battalions were about 600 men each but it was difficult to count as they were running away so fast.
Cheers
Dave
