Coyote's WWII Canadians Thread

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Coyote's WWII Canadians Thread

Post by Coyote » Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:10 pm

So, my next real project is WWII Canadians for Troops, Weapons and Tactics by Too Fat Lardies. I've just started painting four figures at a time. The last batch I painted was my Warlord Games Roman's at 14 figures and found that it was too much at once.

I only like taking pictures the day after I paint something. I use slow-dri because it I find it reduces brush strokes, gives me a smoother coat and keeps the paint workable on the palette.

However, it also means that the paint takes much longer to dry to matte. So, I've painted the helmets and battledress on the four, but won't have pictures until tomorrow. When I was painting the flesh and helmets I was thinking that four was too few miniatures for a batch. However, after painting the battledress I was glad I was only doing four. In a single session I was able to complete the stage. Shade basecoat, mid-layer and two highlights with the last highlight only on the sharp upward facing edges.

I found it really hard to not over do the final highlight, even if it meant leaving an entire limb without that last highlight.[/i]

Ok, I have an up to date picture. It's a little washed out and I did a group shot. I think I'll fix the contrast and just up date the image, so if you are reading this and thinking, "looks fine to me," I've already changed it.

The battledress is not green or light enough for Canadians. Call it a badly mixed dye lot.

Thanks, I was using your QND Guide for the stubble, and will be following it for the mud spatters later.

I fixed the picture above to more accurately show the colours. I don't think my camera likes green.

Here's where we are now, just need to weather and finish the base.

Just finished reading The Regiment by Farley Mowat about the Hasting and Prince Edward Regiment in WWII (mostly Italy)

Very good read if you are interested in the war. I rank it up there with George Blackburn's The Guns series. The Guns of Normandy, The Guns of Victory and Where the Hell Are the Guns?

Ok, they are done. I'm really happy with them. I may take them into work so I can look at them all day.

It was scary to paint the weathering, I was worried I would ruin the miniatures but I looked around Barry's gallery and took inspiration.

So I've started on the next batch of 4. I've renamed the thread so people know that there's more than just the first bunch.

This time I've sculpted netting on three of the miniatures. I am unpracticed at sculpting and hope to improve my technique on the next batch, still it looks like netting and will work.

Here's my latest attempt at WWII Canadian battledress. My references can't seem to agree what colour it should be, even within the same book.

I don't have the heart to recount the story, you can read the terrible tragedy here

Meanwhile, my nearly completed 2nd batch, with weathering and basing remaining.

here's a back-view so you can see how the helmets were painted half green and half brown

46 in the OOB I've planned, 12 after these 4 in the batch I've purchased. I think I may do 6 figures per batch next to speed things up.

Hi,
very nice. Make sure you do a group shot when they are all complete.
