My first ever BLB2 battalion

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

My first ever BLB2 battalion

Post by Usagi » Tue Aug 02, 2011 1:57 am

Greetings Gents,

Please allow me to present my first battalion for BLB2, the 2nd battalion of the Aunis regiment (flags courtesy of Rick O'Brien, the Flag Dude):

They still aren't finished yet, since I need to finish the bases; I dread this step most of all. "Multiple figure basing, from the fine folks who brought you hemorrhoids" :|

Comments, critiques, and even derisive laughter are always welcome.

Cheers,
Tom

A lovely looking unit, sir! :D

But now comes the 'scary' part . . . trying not to get the basing material all over the legs of your gorgeous troops!

These are great, Tom! Might I make one small suggestion? I like the style of flags the Flag Dude turns out, but I would take a few minutes to paint the edges and get rid of the black line that runs around the outside. I think you'll find the style of the flags will match the great shading style of your troops much better...

Tom,

Or you can tell Rick to NOT put that black line around the flags. He does that with a marker by hand after the flag is cut.

I agree with everyone else, that is one fantastic looking unit you have there.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions. I'm constantly seeking to improve my painting skills, so any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. One of the benefits of a site like this is that you can always find another pair of eyes to scrutinize your work; they might well spot anomalies that your own peepers may have missed.

@Clarence: I'll keep your suggestion regarding the flag edges in mind, especially concerning the sashes. I'll need to play around a bit with off whites, as replicating the stain that Rick uses for shading might well prove a challenge.

Cheers,
Tom

Gorgeous looking unit there Tom. Very very nice. The drummers are exceptional !

A tip for basing that I use - I dont paint the shoes before adding sand etc to the base so that I dont ruin the paint job. Once the sand is dried and the ground work painted I then go back and do the shoes. Useful? Maybe. But it works for me.

Lovely looking unit!
When it comes to basing I have changed how I base my figures these days. I used to be fanatical about not getting base paint on the figures but now I actually make a point of dry brushing the basing colour onto the bottom of the figures as it gives a nice campaign look.
Cheers
