Bryce,

Thank You!
They are 'hand picked' by Barry and I keep them as he sorted them with eventually one or two figure changes. Barry added a few figures to the common 18 Figure Battalion to get a dense look as the Saxons are 'all Musket' Infantry.

I started the second Battalion today. I hope the flags for the GNW are coming soon

Thanks for your comments.

Dear Friends,

today I received some 'special' items from Barry which I took as invitation to place at once an order of 15 guns and some staff figures with Warfare Miniatures.
As previously mentioned the 15 gun models are 8 light Guns and 7 Field Guns.
Think big  :D

Cheers,
Günter

Knowing the scale you work to, I assume that's just a single battery...

Dear Friends,

It seems that I have run into some trouble of mind
Here is the problem:
According to the unit organisation like that stated by Dan Schorr the Saxons terminated the word Battalion and used only Regiment. So far so good. After writing and reading many other posts and while starting to paint my own units it happened that I started to paint a second 'part' of a Regiment aka Battalion. But there was no Battalion structure in the Saxon Army :!: .

So would that mean I have to do units of 37-38 Figures  each and against the OOB I posted here (attached here again) that there were only Regiments in the field :?: OR did they split in two Battalions when deployed in the field.

The OOB says 12000 Infantry in 8 Regiment/17 'Battalions', that would mean 750 men or 18 figures per unit in the field.

Another OOB

Dan, did I miss something or is it only my imagination that I have to do two Battalions to built a Regiment.

Anyone willing to help me out of this mind war?

Greatful for any help!
A most Confused

Did Dan post something? I did not see anything.

Here are the answer of Dan Schorr to my Questions:

Günter,

There was no formal "battalion" organization in most armies of the period, including the Swedes, Saxons and Russians. On campaign, the companies of the regiment, usually four, were grouped in "battalions" commanded by the Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel. If the regiment had 12 companies, then a third battalion under the regiment's major or senior captain was also formed. The battalion was strictly a "field" or fighting formation and would not appear as part of an "Etat". The regiment was an administration unit.

Hope this helps,

Dan

further questions by me

Dan,

Thank you for that. I had something like that already in mind but hesitated to pull it through.
The only difficulty now would be if I put lets say 2 'Battalions' in the Field close together as some kind of Regiment would only one carry flags or both? And if both would one carry the Leibfahne and the other eventually Company flags?

You see I am in some kind of dilemma because I dont want to build only worn out Regiments fielding only one 700 men Battalion.

Any helpfull suggestion would be appreciated

Thank You,
Günter

and Dan's answer on this

Günter,

Only the Colonel's Company or Leibkompanie would carry the white Leibfahne. The other companies would carry their company (colored) colours. Both battalions would carry colours. Normally, the colours would be grouped together in the center of the unit.

I forgot to add earlier that the size/strength of each company would also be a determinate. If a unit had say 13 companies but each company was only 50/60 men then the unit would form only one battalion. Battalions usually numbered between 400-700 men depending on fiel conditions, losses and replacements.

I am sure others on the forum will chime in with their thoughts.

Dan

Dear Friends,

I asume that most of the members who may have added their thoughts here to help me solve my dilemma (that possibly isn't a dillemma ) are somewhere else involved or are in preparations for Christmas and didn't therefore find the time to make the comments here.

So I have decided for myself that as I dont want to do Regiments with less than half it's strength to raise two groups of Companies, so-called Battalions.

The primary 'group' should have the Leibfahne and two Company Colours while the secondary 'group' will carry three Company Colours. That may look a bit odd but alas it will give the Regiment full strenght when raised and two 'Battalions' when going into the fight.

Thank you all for following and your kind comments.

Best Wishes,
Günter

Ray,

thank you for your kind words.
Your eye's aren't that bad  :D The name is correct even as it should read as Garde du Corps.

I wish you too a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Best Wishes,
Günter
