Test figure

OK, so after two years I've finally given in to having a section of the FORUM specifically set up to discuss painting techniques, display examples, show your latest projects and chat about this vital part of the hobby. Manufacturers please feel free to post up your sculpts, ask questions about what the gamers are after and generally promote your work.. no charge! Painters, please also feel free to post up your work for comment and critique. I can't promise the unreserved adulation characteristic of some other fora but I would hope you'd get constructive and measured comment!

Test figure

Post by Grenadier » Fri Oct 25, 2013 3:53 pm

This is my very first Warfare mini. It is a test case to apply my limited 28mm painting skills on. He represents a musketeer of the Dutch IR Prinz Albrecht (a Brandenburg unit) while in the service of William III. I'm in need of validation that I can "hang" in this scale, so any criticism would be helpful. Go on, I have a thick skin.

Looks good. Maybe give some highlight on the uniform and dark grey and bits of bright yellow on the hat for depth. If you want more detail you can give definition to hands and face with a lighter shade. If you paint thin light-brown lines along the musket it will stand out and look really good.

That is an excellent job Brian. I would not change anything in terms of style. I would describe it as soft on the eye, realistic in tones, clever in some of the detail (around ankles etc.. nice dusty look) The musket is fine for me, wargamers paint artificial wood grain which is about 50 times too large, most muskets are dark brown almost black with no tonal variation. Give you an 'A' on your report for this 8)

Well done - some excellent work. I like the effect achieved in the lower leg area (and buttons) in particular. Bearing in mind that the image is 'larger than life', this is good stuff.

Linked in so we can see the figure directly on the forum.

Very nice work & please dont paint grain on the musket its another vice like painting eyes that generally only spoils a figure and is best avoided the grain on weapon stocks is very fine & they are all varnished quite heavily & that varnish starts out dark & darkens with age further obscuring the grain patten.

I have several of those from warfare and they are rather nice to paint except mine are all frenchie Militia at the moment.

No not at all but I do have some pet irritants with painting two of which I mentioned in the last post. I will also add that for me was actually quite subtle & not a personal attack. 8)

Barry actually "GRAIN EFFECT IS WORSE" Imo given I am an adherent of a non Abrahamic religion but I get your point & would be Rolling on the floor laughing if there was room in my office to do so.
