Latin. Something like -

"To gain wisdom - fear the Lord"

DPT
In enterprise of martial kind, When there was any fighting, He led his regiment from behind -
He found it less exciting.

...or maybe -

"The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord"

- is better.

DPT
In enterprise of martial kind, When there was any fighting, He led his regiment from behind -
He found it less exciting.

Translated as "the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom". It is a quote from psalm 111

Turrabear,

This flag is one from Schlammersdorf's regiment. Check out page 44 of Brzezinski's "The Army of Gustavus Adolphus 1 Infantry" published by Osprey for a black and white picture of all the flags for this regiment. They are all green and white with gold lettering, I believe. A colour version of one of the flags features on plate E in the above book.

There are undoubtedly other sources, but I did my version of Schlammersdorf a long time ago, so, regrettably, do not have any other suggestions immediately in mind.
