New Book on Battle od Helsingborg (nicht Danish)

Here is a new book on the Battle of Helsingborg: "Det ulykkelige slag"
by Karsten Skjold Petersen. This looks like it will be good. A reviewer compares it favorably with England's book on Poltava and Oscar Sjostrom's book on Fraustadt. If this is true, it's high praise, indeed.

Barry, let's make those Danes you are promising! And the Swedish Cavalry, of course!

Intresting, The question is, should I get it in Danish(I find it quite tiresome to read Danish over a long period)

Upon looking at my thread title, is see that my autocorrect was set to German! My apologies.

Anyway, I get these books regardless of language because there is very little in English.

Well, I got the book last week- very quick service from Denmark to the U.S. - and it looks pretty good. There are lots of photos of paintings, weapons and equipment, many in color, OOBs, good maps and extensive sources references. Of course, it is in Danish, which I decipher more than actually read, but it is likely to be the only modern book on the subject for quite some time, so I would recommend it to readers of Scandinavian languages and anyone else with an interest in the battle who wants to use a good Danish/English dictionary.

If an American tries to get through the book with help from a dictionary.
I guess I can work my way through it too.

Hopefully I'll be able to help you with anything you might not quite get.

Generally the Danish and norwegian I speak use most of the same words.

But the sentence structure is different.

I see they have the book in norwegian book stores so I'll but it once I get my pay.

I got the book. I've read the foreword with out much trouble.
But danes are silly people using strange words when perfectly good Norwegian words are available.

Karsten does solid research. He's helped me a great deal on the reenactment side.

Oh thats high praise!
I've enjoyed the book so far, quite interesting that the Danish army during the invasion of Skåne was more "dano-norwegian" that what was usual for the danish army.
Also quite fun seeing some "norwegian" officers in the mix.

That may explain why the Danes lost when they enjoyed such an advantage

The Danish soldiers were probably mesmerized by the eloquent and clean talking Norwegians, suddenly for the first time in their life, they understood what their officers said. And the started worshiping these Norwegian demi-gods that had the gift of actually speaking like a person. They were in the process of building golden idols to their new gods. When the Swedish attacked.

So the Danes were successful until they couldn't pretend they'd misunderstood what their officers had said. Is that your arguement, a dangerous combination of vocal clarity and incompetence?

No, but it's obvious, if Zeus himself descended from the heavnes, You would be rather dazed and confused and not in the fighting mood.

Why do you think the Swedes did so well early in the war, Swedish is a lot easier to understand than, Russian, Polish, German or Danish.
A lot easier to win when your soldiers understand your generals orders.
Same goes for Marlborough's success in the west. English is much easier to understand than, French or German.

Only that the Duke did parley in French With all his Officers - Prinz Eugen i.e.!
Not German or English but French...17th Century you know?
And France ruled the waves not England

A true story: I was riding on à train from Lund to Copenhagen a couple of years ago. A Norwegian student was talking to a Danish student (in English, of course!) and one of them said, "No one can understand the skånske." The other agreed whole-heartedly.

Maybe that was the Danish commanders problem!
