Guns for the Tsar!

Post by Greystreak » Sun Jan 10, 2010 1:52 pm

With the help of time recently 'saved' from not commuting to work per usual, I managed to finish my first battery of guns in 28mm scale. These are Napoleonic Russians (sculpted by Alan Perry for Foundry); specifically the 7th Position Battery of bronze 12 pounders, with crew in 'Winter' uniform (hence green trousers). The gun colours were executed using the Foundry 'Authentic' Napoleonic Artillery paint set.

These are yet to oversprayed with Testor's Dullcote for a final finish (inclement weather), but have been varnished with W&N Galleria Acrylic matt by brush, over an initial gloss coat of Liquitex Acrylic varnish. Comment and critique are welcome.

Yes really nice.. and I have painted a lot of these figures before and don't remember some of the poses :? Did new additions join the range after the initial release?

Barry, to my knowledge there were only ever the two 'packs' of gun crews available from Foundry--RN2/4 & RN4/8--comprising 8 total poses. I don't know the order in which they were released, sorry.

(I received the battery as a 'unit', part of a 'Russian Army' of a Foundry Russian Army birthday/Christmas gift 2 years ago.)

Very nice Bryce.

Lovely painting and great bases. Are you willing to reveal what brands of flock / static grass you used? I really like the look you've achieved there.

Thanks, John, and yes I'm happy to share details on basing materials:

1. Silflor Tufts - large (Early Autumn) and medium (Spring) sizes - 3-4 each per base;
2. Flock: a) Javis 'Hairy Grass' (Autumn Mix) & b) a mix of grasses from a Noch 'Sampler' pack, containing about a dozen varieties (length & colour), which I blended to 'break up' the same-length monotony of the Javis grass.
I apply the Silflor tufts with PVA and tweezers, and the flock using Scatter Grip (doll-house maker's glue), and a Noch 'squeeze bottle' applicator, to charge the flock with static electricity, to enhance the 'vertical' aspect.

Hope that helps. In the UK I typically source my materials from Jed Norton at Antenociti's Workshop (http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/products.html).

Many thanks Bryce - I'll take a look at their stuff. A "Noch squeeze bottle applicator" sounds a bit kinky :D

Really nice work. As Barry knows I have more than a few Russian guns myself. I ended up supplementing the rather limited Foundry Russian Napoleonic artillery crew poses with a few from their Crimean range. Yes, they are a bit smaller but they are gereally transferrable with a minimum amount of work.

Sadly Russian Napoleonic limbers and wagons are neglected by all the manufacturers out there. Great of we could get a Cossack wagon or a few two and four horse limbers.

Hi,

eventually you may use Hinchliffe Models? The Limbers are large and fine and I think historical correct too.

http://www.hinchliffe.co.uk/list.htm

I once tried some of them myself and I was struck by their size compared with my Minifigs I used at this time.

Here is the list:

Russian Artillery & equipment
25/CM Russian Napoleonic 12 Pdr long barrel. -
25/CO Russian Napoleonic 12 Pdrshort Barrel. -

25/AL Russian Napoleonic Limber. -
25/AZ Russian Napoleonic 10 Pdr Howitzer. -
25/CH Russian Napoleonic Ammunition Caisson. -

Thanks Gunter,

Old Glory also produce a few suitable pieces including limbers and ammunition wagons.

With the new Front Rank French limbers and the future Perry plastic French limbers I am hopeful that there will at least be some conversion possibilities.
