Question for Barry... Colours for dirty uniforms?

I finally decided to paint my Nappy minis with dirt on their uniforms. I was looking at the Grand Battery shots in the rules (for example pg. 78 ) and was wondering what colours you used?

I change it depending on the colour of the uniform. For dark uniforms I use lighter browns and light uniforms I use darker browns:

I have used:

DARK:

Vallejo Flat Earth
Vallejo US Field Drab

LIGHT:

Vallejo: Dark Flesh
Vallejo: Leather Brown
Vallejo: German Camo Ochre
Vallejo: Red Leather

All work well... make sure the brush is old and coarse and has plenty of bristles left. Don't make the paint too - - thick is better.
Wipe the brush almost dry with a tissue before the 'splatter'

Run a dark brown wash over the shoes and around the figure's feet afterwards... replaces the shadow and definition

THX Barry!

Have most of the colours at home, so I can give it a try at once!

Cheers,

Burkhard,

Thought you might be interested in my approach to mud. Unlike Barry, I don't splatter on the mud but actually "paint" it on "properly" in irregularly shaped patches. I use three layers of brown: burnt umber, beige brown and cork brown (all Vallejos).

I do like Barry's idea of dark mud on light uniforms and light mud on dark uniforms. I'll have to give that a try.

You can see pix of my mud-work in various place on my blog like:
