free 28mm ruleset?

Post by lord marcus » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:37 am

Does anyone have reccomendations? Myself and some friends would like to start out with a free system before we pour much needed money on the likes of blackpowder.

The March of Eagles from Victrix is free (for now!). You can download the incomplete set from their website I think. The completed version will be out at some point in the future.

I was thinking more on the side of division level and up, but thanks!

So something grand tactical then?

Try Quick Play Grande Armee (Sam Mustafa's rules) - available as a free down load (with separate charts etc) here -

(Links to the various PDF's at the bottom of the page)

You will have to adapt things for it to work with 28mm perhaps - but I've played them a couple of times in very large multi-players games and they worked well enough.

Just an aside here lord marcus, but I am not sure why you are looking to try out free "division level and up" rules when your stated intention is to eventually invest in Black Powder (or Lasalle, according to your other topic / post on this forum)?

Both Black Powder and Lasalle will offer a very different gaming experience from the "divisional level and up" type of rules you are enquiringly about.

Somewhat grand tactical, but we (my group) still want to see the interactions of certain lower level formations, which we have read both the aforementioned rules sets contain. is this not so?

There are a lot of Napoleonic rules sets about, which play at all sorts of levels of action from a skirmish to corps but it would be churlish to ignore Republic to Empire here if only because dear old Barry wrote the them. I am a little confused why if some one is prepared to spend the time and the money on a Napoleonic army the price of a set of rules would be a problem unless the set in question was foundry's Napoleon I which case I might agree.

We have some miniatures, and would like to try out the period before expanding and also buying a rulebook. :)

We aren't, thats the thing. We got the mini's to paint up and we wanted to try a game out (like a painting side project that spawns a gaming army)
