British 1799 army in Holland

Post by Keith T » Tue Jan 12, 2016 12:08 pm

I am slowly building a British army for the campaign in Holland in 1799, fighting French and Dutch troops.
Not the most glorious episode in British history but found some great figures from Trent miniatures [Irish militia] and it is good to do something different.
So far painted 5 battalions of line infantry in Bicorns [24figures each] and one squadron of heavy dragoons[Front rank].

Waiting on some light infantry in round hats with crest, looks a bit like a tirliton. [not sure of the spelling] Also some light Dragoons in Tirliton.

Aiming to do 8 battalions and 4 squadrons plus some artillery.

It's actually called a "Tarleton" after a British commander from the American War of Independence. That said, he didn't invent it - it was probably Spanish or French originally - but was worn in America from 1776 by the 16th Light Dragoons, of which Tarleton was a junior officer at the start of the war, and later by American cavalry. However, it was made famous by the light dragoons of the British Legion (which Tarleton eventually commanded) and the Queen's Rangers; this, and his flamboyant post-war lifestyle - including richly entertaining his former enemies - led to the headgear being named after him.

The Tarleton was last worn in battle in 1866 as far as I can tell.
