My new WSS blog

Post by 18th Century Guy » Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:09 am

I've started my own WSS blog so I can share what I paint, get (hopefully) constructive comments back on how I can improve and hopefully most of all how I can take better pictures! :)

Thanks for looking and commenting in advance.

Power to you Greg!

Photo tips from me:

1. Get a tripod
2. Get a cable release or auto shutter control
3. Don't use flash EVER
4. Learn how to use your aperture A settings for depth of field
5. Shoot from angles which minimize the necessity to crop or photoedit
6. Use the highest resolution you can
7. Ensure all bases are neat, not overlapping sitting awkwardly on terrain etc before you shoot.

That should do for now :D

Yes, the flags are on cloth. I get them from The Flag Dude.

Thank you sir, I am humbled by your comments. One thing I'm working on is a leadership base and naturally Barry had some influence with this. I really enjoy Barrys' dioramas with command figures. I've had some of the Front Rank cavalry kettledrummers painted up by two difference painting services - 1st one was via Ioannis and the 2nd was via Big Battalions (Gramham). There were two from each service and all 4 are lovely but you can see the differences between these painting houses. My idea is to have a commander, personal guard figure, standard bearer and, hopefully there's room left, a kettledrummer. We'll see how this all works out.

My idea is to have each commander with his own 'flag' (i.e. color) and then I'd have the smaller based subcommanders with the same colored flag but smaller. Right now I'm working on the French side so a flag with just rows of fleur de lis on them with each commander having a different color - blue, red, white, green, yellow, etc. Then I'll paint up 3 or 4 subcommanders using the same colored flag but just smaller. That's the idea anyway, we'll see how it works out.

Nice stuff 18cg!

I've got to get a blog going one of these days.

Are you going to do the Gardes du Corps when Alec gets those figures done?

If he does them then I'll paint them. I wasn't aware that Front Rank was considering doing the Garde du Corps figures. That'd be awesome! I figured I was going to have to learn how to use green stuff and augment some FR figures myself. Where did you hear that Alex was going to them? I'd love to confirm that if at all possible.

You might just ring him up. I asked last year around Christmas and he said he hoped to do them this year, but the NYW stuff seems to be consuming the whole year.

I've suggested that it would be nice to have some Prussian specific figures and hope he does those, but I didn't get a response on that.

I'd also really like some Spanish specific figures as well. I expect to have a fairly large Spanish contingent in my French army.

Truth be told, I've been asking for Franco-Prussian from Front Rank. Now that would make 19th Century Trooper (Terry) very happy.

Why the heart failure for Franco-Prussian from Front Rank? Just curious as to why not?

I can't speak for Ben of course. I don't want him to do it mainly because it will distract his time from WSS. If he does a few more things for WSS then he can fire away as far as I care. But I would prefer him to spend cycles sculpting French Garde du Corps, Spanish, and Prussians.

Because I am a wargaming butterfly, am exceedingly interested in the Franco-Prussian war (as well as every other 19th century continental war) and Alec doing the figures would mean bankruptcy and debtor's prison for me...
