Hi Jim
Thanks for the heads up. I checked the site but I believe they are only coming out on 18th October.

Yes, senility approaches at a frightening pace. Adam could you please PM me on the 18th to make sure I haven't forgotten this already?

Has anyone seen the Glory of the Sun cavalry? I looked on the Copplestone site but didn't see anything.
Thanks.

They're here!
But only troopers, no command as yet. I need to take a closer look before I commit.
Just what exactly do they mean by
buff coats? I know what a buff coat is in the ECW but, does that mean they were buff in colour or of "buff" material capable of being painted red or blue or grey or whatever?
Here is an excerpt from Mark's newsletter:
"Hi
At last some new packs for the Glory of the Sun range:
http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/ra ... ?range=GOS
GS18 Dismounted Dragoons in Hat Firing
GS19 Dismounted Dragoons in Hat At Ready
GS20 Mounted Dragoons in Hat
GS21 Cavalry in Buff Coat with Carbine 1
GS22 French Cavalry in Buff Coat with Carbine 1
The mounted dragoons come with separate scabbarded swords and the cavalry with separate carbines (a mixture of flintlocks and wheellocks) and scabbards.
GS21 represents a standard type of well-equipped cavalryman you might see in any army of the Dutch or Scanian Wars. As with the infantry I've used the term "French" to denote be-ribboned soldiers with fashionable half-sleeves and smaller hats, although they need not be actually be French.
More cavalry in buff coats and dragoons in caps next, followed very soon by cavalry in cuirasses, French dragoons and some command packs. Before Christmas I hope I`ll have added some mounted personalities: Louis XIV, William of Orange, The Prince-Bishop of Munster, the Grand Conde, Turenne and the Duke of Monmouth.
As I`ve said before the period 1665-1680 really has lots to offer, despite its apparent obscurity: colourful (but not too standardised) uniforms, campaigns right across Europe from the Pyrenees to the Baltic and lots of battles."
Regards,
Jim

Jim, it's basically a thick leather coat, sometimes with and sometimes without sleeves, made (IIRC) from ox leather (if at possible, despite the cost) or lesser quality material if ox not available.
Imagine ECW horse and that's roughly what you are looking at.

Mike,
Stupid question - was it buff coloured or dyed in different colours?

Jim,
generally it was a buff colour, although I suppose like any leather it could in theory be dyed.
Oddly enough (and I have to check with some people on this) the buff doesn't actually refer to the colour, but to the leather itself but over the years the term and the colour have become synonymous with each other.

Wha? Who? What's all that noise? Who woke me up?
Oooh! Those are nice. Money handed over, now to settle down to some grumbling about the state of the postal system...

Apparently the toughening process gave it a yellowish hue. My equivalent would be humbrol enamels #94.

Gentlefolk,
I am going to show my ignorance here and ask what regiments the cavalry could be used for? All the French cavalry I have seen had grey or blue coats. Who would have worn buff?
Regards,
Jim
