I am not so sure the Huguenots would not utilize the fleur de lis. The so-called " Huguenot Cross" which was, at least least according to the attached source, created in 1688, contains four of them. That doesn't necessarily mean that the symbols on the flags are fleurs de lis, just that if visual inspection of the paintings does not rule it out the fact that Louis XIV used the symbol might not rule out it's use.

Anyway, that is great info from the paintings.

I've made some more and revamped my old Huguenots flags, for the Boyne regiments, what do you think? There's more on my blog.

Hi all,

As I wait for the apostle equipped infantry figures to be released, I've been working on my Danish contingent. I'm going to be turning my attention to the three Huguenot foot units that fought in Ireland shortly and found this thread and the others on the topic very helpful in concocting what I want these boys will look like. The one detail I haven't seemed to find is whether they employed grenadiers and if they did is there any info on headgear. Sorry if I may have missed this info in my searching. I certainly not a button colour nazi so
any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Anyone ever come up with any info on Schomberg's Huguenot horse standards? Or even a guess? Never mind the flags for the shop - I want to paint the regiment for my collection...

Thanks, Ray...

I know about the two regiments. I actually need to add the Count of Schomberg's flag as well and hadn't noticed the Warflag pic before. I think for the Duke of Schomberg I'll just go with the family crest which is diagonal stripes of red and grey. I know that a coat of arms was not often used, but seems more common on horse standards than foot. In any case, no one seems to know so as long as I can make a point about the origin of the design, I'm happy...

Well I just got my copies of Galster's Danish Troops in Ireland and Glozier's Huguenot Soldiers of William of Orange and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and seem to have answered my own question on grenadiers. From these sources it looks as if the Huguenots did field grenadiers in Ireland while the Danes with the exception of the Garden til Fods did not.

A lifetime or so ago I spent some time deep in the local unversity library basement searching thru Calendars of State Papers etc and found two useful pieces of information about the Huguenot regiments.

1. In the London Gazette of March 14th 1691 a deserting surgeon of Cambon's regiment is said to be wearing a light grey coat (suit of clothes) with a silver seam. No other facing colour is mentioned so possibly white with silver/white lace

2. The Treasury Book for 1691 page 1113 shows a list of materials (in French) sent to Belcastel's regiment including "Justeau corps et veste bleue" with "surtouts gris blanc".

I'm delighted to hear there is a representation of a Huguenot regimental standard in a a painting:

"finally got my hands on the hi res sections of Maas and Wyck's paintings of the Boyne."

Is there any chance we could have a look at this? I'm unclear from the posts so far whether the gold "fleur-de-lis" are on only on one canton or all four. A photo would be very welcome.
