Gaming the Scania War or GNW in 1/72 scale . . .

Post by Charlie Dozen » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:37 pm

I've been reading Fighting Talk for about a month now but I just registered today. Is anyone here gaming these periods in 1/72nd scale? I started gaming the GNW back in the early 1990's using 25mm Dixon and Foundry miniatures, several years ago I sold all my metal 25mm miniatures and went to 1/72 scale exclusively. I currently have somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 of the plastic 1/72nd scale Zvezda GNW figures. They are all mounted on 3/4" x 3/4" sheet metal bases, the movement bases are made out of plastic sheet card with magnetic strips glued to them. This way I can use my figures for any set of rules basing system, also I can place them on my 1" round plastic sheet card bases for my skirmish gaming. I also have 300 to 400 of the Zvezda GNW figures that I'm converting for the Scania War, I cut the tricornes off the Russians figures and add either a karpus or round floppy hat, plus I cut off the bayonets. Some of the Zvezda GNW figures will work for the cavalry but I've also got some of the old MiniFig 25mm Marlburian miniatures that fit nicely on the Zvezda horses.
I purchased a copy of Beneath the Lily Banners last month and will give these rules a go, I also have Field of Glory and Age of Reason rule sets for the GNW. When I get the time I'll post some pictures of my painted Zvezda figures.
It's amazing that so much information on this period is available here on this site, I really enjoy reading all the posts.

Here are some links showing what these figures look like:
Swedish Dragoons of Charles XII
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1328

Swedish Artillery of Charles XII
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1714

Great Northern War Swedish infantry
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1084

Dragons of Peter I
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1850

Russian Artillery of Peter the Great
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1598

Russian Infantry of Peter the Great
http://www.plasticsoldierrreview.com/Re ... px?id=1151

Zaporozhian Cossacks
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com?Review.aspx?id=1640

These figures are actually 25mm not the 1/72 listed on the boxes, I guess that's why the old MiniFig 25mm Marlburian cavalry miniatures look ok with them.

I'll post pictures of some of my painted Swedish and Russian figures when I get back home next week.

I messed up on the last two links, they should be:
Russian Infantry of Peter the Great http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1151
Zaporozhian Cossacks
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1640

I was rather hesitant to switch to plastic figures because I never could get the paint to stick, but then I had another war gamer put me onto first coating the figures with a white glue. Next I spray them with either a black or white flat primer, a coat of ink wash if I used the white primer and then paint. After painting I coat the figures with the MinWax PolyShades Walnut stain. So far this process seems to protect the paint jobs really well.

Zvedza figures are really very nice indeed, looking forward to seeing your pics when you upload them.

Welcome! Sounds like an impressive collection that you have. I have played a couple of games of GNW with Beneath the Lily Banners and found them enjoyable and challenging.

Yes my 1/72 scale GNW collection is rather large - now if I could only get all those figures painted! As it stands right now I've only got about 50 infantry and 50 cavalry painted. For the GNW I've got the following units mounted on their movement stands but not painted:
8 battalions of Swedish infantry (19 man units)
12 squadrons of Swedish cavalry (12 man units)
I've purchased 5 boxes of the Swedish artillery but only have a few guns and crew built and mounted

8 battalions of Russian infantry (19 man units)
8 squadrons of Russian cavalry (12 man units)
I've purchased 5 boxes of the Russian artillery but only have a few guns and crew built and mounted

8 battalions of Saxon infantry (19 man units)
8 squadrons of Saxon cavalry (12 man units)
I haven't done anything yet with the Saxon artillery

8 battalions of Danish infantry (19 man units)
8 squadrons of Danish cavalry (12 man units)
I haven't done anything yet with the Danish artillery

I've purchased 3 boxes of the Zaporozahian Cossacks but only have a few painted and mounted

For the Scanian War I've got the following units mounted on their movement stands but not painted:
8 battalions of Swedish infantry (19 man units)
8 squadrons of Swedish cavalry (12 man units)
I haven't done anything yet with the Swedish artillery

8 battalions of Danish infantry (19 man units)
8 squadrons of Danish cavalry (12 man units)
I haven't done anything yet with the Danish artillery

I've purchased 3 boxes of the 1/72nd scale Imex Pilgrims to use for my Snapphane figures - about half have been mounted on movement stands

Yesterday I finished up mounting 4 battalions of those Scanian War figures on their movement bases. First I cut the plastic sheet card bases 3.5" x 2.5", sand all the edges; then I glue the 1/2" magnetic strips to the bases; I purchase the 3/4" x 3/4" sheet metal bases from a local sheet metal fabricating company but I use a file to round off the four corners; I then carefully remove all flashing from each figure with an Exacto no. 11 blade; each figure is then glued to the metal base with DAP Contact Cement; the battalion is then ready for the painting process. Mounting each figure on a metal base works out great for the painting process because I use 1" diameter dowel rods cut to 1" lengths with a 1/2" x 1/2" strip of magnetic tape on one end, that way it's much easier to handle each figure while I'm painting it.

Here's how I base the battalion for Beneath the Lily Banners rules:

Rank Firing units:
stand #1
M M
M M
M M
stand #2
E D E
P P
P P

stand #3
M G
M M
M M

Platoon Firing units:
stand #1
M M M
M M M

stand #2
E D O E
P P P

stand #3
M M G
M M M

KEY:
M = musketeer P = pikeman G = grenadier E = ensign
D = drummer O = officer

Mounting my figures on metal bases with magnetic strips on the movement base allows me to mount them according to which ever set of rules I'm using and/or for individual mounting for skirmish gaming.

But these are only a part of my 1/72nd scale collection, I also have Romans, Carthagenians, gladiators, Vikings, medieval knights and peasants, samurai, Thirty Years War, American Civil War, wild west and WWII. The only other gaming scale that I have are my 28mm Bretonnian knight figures, Necromunda figures and my 1/35th scale WWII. I sold off my rather large collection of Dragon 1/6th scale 'dolls', I had over 100 of those action figures - WWII and Wild West.

I'm really looking forward to gaming the GNW and Scanian War with Barry's Beneath the Lily Banners - Ga Pa!

I'm not sure if this link will work or not, I'm not at home right now but I found this picture on my daughter's computer.

http://goldtoken.com/games/album?id=15769

In this picture the cavalry are mounted on two man stands (for Age of Reason rules) and all the infantry are mounted on the 1" round stands that I use for my skirmish gaming. Only the grenadier base has been finished (grassed, etc.) Although this is not a very good picture of these miniatures the miniatures themselves are very nicely painted. I'll post better pictures once I get back home.

One of the advantages of plastics is that it doesn't seem quite so heretical to game with then unpainted... :D I did a tot up of my unpainted figures for Grand Alliance recently and had to go for a bit of a lie down, it was such a big number... (And now I have big bunch of GNW figures on the way to me, ulp!)
