Ray, these are splendid... really nice and they show how well the Reiver figures scrub up when painted. I would think Rob and the boys would be well pleased with these as an advert for the range

Schomberg's Horse at the Boyne

Post by Churchill » Mon Jun 30, 2008 9:54 pm

Hi all,

Another uniform question.......I'm still intending on building a British Marlburian Army, but because the other club members are more interested in doing the war in Ireland so I've been forced to buy and paint a few Williamite regiments.
In the Anglo-Irish forces under the regiments of Horse there is the Count Schomberg regiment and in the Huguenot force there is the Duke Schomberg regiment.
I want to paint two squadrons as the Count of Schomberg Horse, can anyone help with the uniforms please.I believe they were father and son and wasn't one of them killed.

Any help would be grateful......Ray.

Hi Ray

The duke was the father and he got wacked. Someone mentioned the Hugenoets in grey but that might be the infantry.

Hi Ray

The Hugeunot horse and foot were all protestant refugees from established units under Loius XIV's reign and as such were basically French in most aspects.

The foot are recorded as being clothed in grey/white; typically French. I have not encountered anything specific for their Horse at the Boyne but there is a listing of a Schomberg regiment of Cavalerie Legere (basically Horse) for the period in Susane's "Histoire de la Cavalerie", Paris, 1874. That has them wearing Grey with red reverses. I have painted mine up in a lightblueish grey with red facings. The other (Schm. senior) unit I have had no luck with and painted in red coats with black facings.
Hope this is of use.

I hope to get some pics on our group website soon.

Regards
Tim

There were two regiments of Schomberg's Horse during this period which no doubt causes some confusion. Schomberg senior's regiment was the Hugeunot Regiment of Horse. Schomberg's junior's regiment was an English Regiment of Horse. After the Nine Years War the Hugeunot Regiment went off the English establishment however junior's regiment stayed on.

Schomberg's Horse at the Boyne

Post by Churchill » Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:15 pm

Thank you all for your help and Iain Stanford for his e-mail.
The Frederick, Duke of Schomberg's Huguenot regiment of 9 troops (3 squadrons) was dressed in light grey coats with red cuffs and buff breeches with yellow buttons & white hat lace. Taken over by Henry de Ruvigny, Viscount Galway after Fredericks death at the Boyne.
The Duke's title then moved on to his eldest son another Frederick who himself was killed at the battle of Marsaglia in 1693.
The Count (Meinhardt) 2nd eldest son who was present with his father at the Boyne and commanded the Schomberg horse under the British establishment inherited the title in 1693, but took to colonelcy of what would become the 7th Dragoon Guards from Lord Cavendish on the 10th April 1690...Red Coats, Black Cuffs/Vest, Buff Breeches, White Hat Lace, Tin Buttons, Buff Shabraque with White Trim.
Meinhardt and his regiment (2 squadrons) were at Blenhiem in 1704 within Palmes Brigade (5 squadrons) these successfully charged the French Gendarmerie (8 squadrons) first recoiling them then routing them.

Great stuff.............Ray.

Those are really nice Ray, I like the long grass on the horse bases! Makes it look so much more "alive".
