Army of James II 1690

Post by Eagleoftheninth » Thu May 14, 2009 12:53 pm

Can anyone direct me to a good book- or magazine article- on the uniforms of James' army in Ireland in 1690 ?

Cheers

Hi Andy
I've got the Battle of Aughrim book and have also used From Pike to Shot as well as the articles printed in Wargames Illustrated covering the 9 years war issue 65 off the top of my head.

There isn't too much information available, but you could try;

William III at War in Scotland and Ireland 1689-1681 C A Sapherson
From Pike to Shot 1685- 1720 Charles S Grant
Mark Allen's articles in WI; Issue 54 is particular to the Irish army.

They probably cover largely the same ground.

Andy,

is there anything specific or a general overview - Most are covered in my books on the Boyne (Osprey) and Aughrim (History Press), but research goes ever, ever on.

The William II at War... is pretty useful although when I wrote my piece on Newtonbutler for Wargames Journal about a year ago I did quite a bit of research cross referring about four sources and found many anomalies in Sapherson's material(which incidnetally I rate highly and have used as a source many times). His numbers often don't stack up.
Have you seen the Newtonbutler piece? If not try WJ on line or I may upload the manuscript onto the site hear if enough people are interested.

Barry,

I, for one, would be interested in having a read.

Cheers,
