Dutch War (Glory of the Sun)

Post by Captain of Dragoons » Sun Aug 09, 2009 11:34 pm

Really like the look and style of the new 'Glory of the Sun' line.

I have a few questions that about the Dutch War in the 1670's. Hoping someone can help me out.

1) First any good books or sources for the Franco-Dutch War?
2) Did the armies of the Dutch and French have standard uniforms as per the LoA/GA period?
3) For the Anglo-Dutch Brigade at this time am I right in thinking that they had both English and Scots regiments (six)?
4) Ratio of shot to pike 3:1? Cavalry Sqns to Infantry Battalions 2:1?
5) French Cavalry superior? Dutch Army starts poorly but gets better under William?

Thanks
Edward

Some very broad questions, so some broad answers.

1) Check out the Williamite Universe Website. The have a special section on the military aspects: http://www.let.uu.nl/ogc/William/military.htm

2) Yes. No. Sometimes. Depending on the money of the colonel. Uniforms started in the 1690's.

3) There was no 'Anglo Dutch' brigade. The Republic had at that period three English regiments and about five Scottish regiments on the payroll.

4) 2:1. A typical army consisted of about 1/3 cavalry, 2/3 infantry.

5) Yes. The State's Army started under William against the French with companies undermanned, corrupt or non-existing officers, and a lack of political will. Gradually this changed, starting with the succeslfull water defence lines in the Provinces of Holland, Friesland and Groningen and the succesfull siege of Naarden. William was a rash commander who learned quickly and although he didn't win that many battles against the French, the times of decisive battles were over.

Edward,

If you contact me off forum, I would be happy to send you a copy of the bibliography that I am compiling for the period. On the plus side, many of books are available for download from Google Books.

There is little in English, but Child's book on the Army of Charles II should help with your questions about the so-called Anglo-Dutch Brigade. Lynn's two books on the French Army and the Wars of Louis XIV should also help.

I doubt you will find much on uniforms for the period, but the Osprey booklet on Louis XIV's Army will get you started. There just has not been much research done on uniforms and colours and standards for this period. A word of caution, be somewhat suspect of any uniform information you might find on the web.

Hope this helps.

Dan
