British cavalry uniforms WSS

Post by footslogger » Sun Jan 09, 2011 8:23 pm

I have a couple of the Robert Hall plates and some uniform books. A couple of questions, one easy, and one probably impossible.

The Hall plates don't show any buttonhole lace for troopers. On the Front Rank British figs there is button - lace. Easy question, did the troopers have buttonhole lace? For any regiment, all regiments? (I can use Front Rank WSS cav which doesn't have lace as well as the British figs, but seeing the difference makes me ask).

Now the impossible question. I'm just hoping someone has explored this and has some useful guidance. Hall shows these guys in red coats and some of the books say that the coats of British horse were crimson. Has anyone looked into this and were they really crimson, rather than just red? (I know answers to these questions are just hard, before you take into considerations fading, etc., but I still think about such things).

Thanks all

Oh, man! You remember that old Python routine with the "slow" guy standing there, "My ... brain ... hurts!"

I've used my Dremel tool to remove unwanted lace. You could try that or just use an xacto knife or rat tail file to scrape/file them off prior to priming.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I was thinking I would just use the generic WSS cav figures for British cav since they don't have buttonhole lace.

Iain, would this mean that our well-loved "redcoats" wore grey-white just like the French and Dutch when they were at Blenheim?

Ref Schomberg's Hores

There were two regiments of Schomberg's Horse during this period which no doubt causes some confusion. Schomberg senior's regiment was the Hugeunot Regiment of Horse. Schomberg's junior's regiment was an English Regiment of Horse. After the Nine Years War the Hugeunot Regiment went off the English establishment however junior's regiment stayed on.
