One Battle to rule them all - 1660 to 1721

As per my One Battle to rule them all - Napoleonic thread on Fighting Talk but for the 1660-1721 period.

If you could only set up the table and miniatures one more time and you were stuck with playing that one Dutch War/Glorious Revolution/Grand Alliance/WSS/GNW battle over and over again which one would you pick and what would be your reasoning for picking that battle?

Would you pick Seneffe, The Boyne, Neerwinden, Blenheim, etc :?:

For me Seneffe would be interesting because its four small battles combined into one. Ramillies would be good as a grand spectacle but Oudenarde may have more different outcomes as a meeting engagement.

cheers
Edward

Lund, 1676. Because I already have all the units (it was a small battle) in 28mm, so I don't need to buy any more.

Both of the last two (but I'm biased)

For me the choice would be between a brief campaign and a single battle.

The campaign would be Turenne's final campaign in the Rhineland from 1673 til his death at Salzbach in 1675, campaigning against his old foe Montecuccoli. This would also feature the exploits or misadventures of young John Churchill and the English Brigade.

For a single battle? Marsaglia in 1693. I have recently been doing a great deal of research on this battle (with much help from friends) and have now worked my way through most of the mis-spellings, wrong regimental names, and other assorted variances in the published OB's. I have also identified the uniforms and flags of the majority of participants (except for the flags of the Spanish Tercios, which refuse to give in). But, you have French, Germans in French service, Walloons in French service and Irish in French service; all facing off against Savoyards, Spanish, Swiss in Spanish service, Italians, Austrians, Bavarians, Brandenburgers, and Huguenots in British pay. Very colorful and you have to love a battle that was "saved" by the Irish and featured (reportedly) the first documented, formed bayonet charge.

Fun stuff!

Bill,

When reading you are looking for informations on spanish Tercios the following sprang to my mind:

http://usuarios.multimania.es/ao1617/home.html

For uniform and flags you have to use this link

http://usuarios.multimania.es/ao1617/weapon.html#33

Btw. my favorite battle would be one of the GNW, the Battle of Kalisz 1706, one of the largest Cavalry actions of this time.
I dont know on what sources Wikipedia leans but according to Schuster/Franke there were about 24-26.000 Saxon/Polish/Russian ( 8-9000 were Cossacks) Mounted Troops against 8000 Swedish and 10.000 Polish Crown Troops.
This battle was fought by August the Strong under the pending terms of the Peacetreaty of Altranstaedt.

Günter,

Very, very familiar with Dr. Picouet's excellent "Spanish Tercios" site. It's one that I've had bookmarked for a couple of years now, since his original site through another host. I've corresponded with Dr. Picouet in the past and we have used him as a source for articles on the "Wars of Louis Quatorze" blog. Dr. Picouet has also collaborated with many other knowledgeable people like Dan Schorr (host of the former "Northern Wars" site) and much of his Imperialist flag material has come from Sergio Camero of the Spanish Vexilollogie Society. Most of the Tercio flags on the site are taken from J. Belaubre, "Les Triomphes de Louis XIV" Paris 1971, and unfortunately, most of the "trophies" are unidentified. Another excellent source is GianCarlo Boeri's CD on the Spanish Army in the War of the League of Augsburg, 1688-1697, which includes these same "trophies" and others, also unidentified unfortunately.

By the way, were you aware that Dr. Picouet has now published an excellent book (in French only) on the same subject through Stèphane Thion's publishing company, LRT Editions? Well worth adding to the collection!

Edward,

My apologies as well. I seem to have difficulty with the engagement of the "clutch" in my brain. It just jumps in to gear and information starts coming out before I can apply the brakes and engage the clutch. :roll:

Günter,

Alle sind gut, der gut beendet. Es ist gut zu sehen, dass wir viele der gleichen Quellen teilen. Seien Sie gut mein Freund.

Best Regards to All;

Bill

Sir William.
You are near Fort Worth. Excellent area of Texas, I've been there a few times now. You're not in Waco though are you?

Jim;

From my driveway to the Brazos River Crossing in Waco is right at 90 miles, straight down Interstate Highway 35 going south. Just "down the road aways" as we say here in Texas.
