Cravat and tassels also for French Cavalry

A simpl question. I know the French infantry had a cravat and tassels on their flag; had the cavalry thes also?

The Hall books show them as having them

Arnaud Bunel on his site, "Vexillologie militaire européenne", also shows the Gendarmes of the Maison du Roi with cravattes and tassels.

The best 28mm "toppers" that I have seen with both tassels and cravates were from Front Rank, but these are long ones suitable for Infantry. Hinchcliffe Models used to make both the long ones and shorter ones for cavalry guidons. I don't see these on the new Hinds/Hinchcliffe site, but you might contact them and see if they still offer them. This assumes, of course, that you are interested in 28mm.

Bill, have bought the Front Rank ones but ndeed , these would be very large for cavalry. Will look nto the Hinchcliffe ones. And since last year we (alde garde) are pro 25mil (see our blog for crisis: www.aldegarde.blogspot.com)

According to Pierre Charrié, the cravate was progressively adopted by French cavalry regiments after the battle of Fleurus in 1690. Its use does not seem to have been immediate and universal, though, as Guérard's 1693 Exercices de Mars shows cavalry standards without cravates - though infantry flags have them. It would appear that its adoption was a gradual process than spanned the 1690's.

The tassels were actually the ends of the thin rope used to tie the cravate around the standard pole
