Argyll Regiment at Ramillies

Post by Timmagh » Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:28 am

Good evening all, this is my first time on here, please be kind :)

I'm currently building 2, 15mm Minifigs armies for Ramillies based on the orbat in Neil Litten's book Ramillies, Marlborough's Masterpiece.
I seem to have hit the wall with one regiment... so far.
The Argyll Regiment, Scottish Regiment in Dutch pay

I can't seem to find uniform or flag details ANYWHERE.

My sources already searched are...Charles Grant's books, Google, The Dutch Regiments site (can't remember the link) any other site I can find and the Robert Hall & Claus-Peter Goldberg disks.

If anyone has any information at all I would be MOST greatfull.
Failing that, I think I'll go with Red coats, white facings and generic Blue flag with white saltire with maybe the Argyll crest on it.

Thanks.
I've been trolling through the posts here the last couple of days before I joined, there seems such a HUGE knowledge-base :-)

Welcome Timmagh :)

From the top of my head: wasn't Argyll the commander of the Scottish Brigade? I believe the Scottish regiments in Dutch pay at the time were Lauder, Murray, Colyear, Strathnaver, Hamilton and Portmore.

Cheers,

I think if you check your Goldberg source more closely you'll see that it is one and the same as Strathnaver and the uniform according to Goldberg is unknown.

Argyll was the oberst from 1702 and was promoted to brigadier in 1704.

Thanks Mats and Footslogger,

Yep, checked Goldberg and The Dutch Regiments site and various other sources, The Argyll Regiment was also called Strathnaver, Lorne and Tullibardine, and all sources say "Uniform unknown"
(or the equivalent in Dutch)

I think I'll give up and just go with white facings and a generic St Andrews Cross flag with maybe the Argyll crest or something on it.

But still.... if anyone else has some info.........? :)

Thanks for the help gents,
for those that are interested, I found the standards for the Argyll Regt in Argyll's brigade in the Claus-Peter Goldberg disk "Die Vereingten Niederlande 1701-1704.
(listed as Tullibardine which is what it became after Argyll)
For the uniform, I'm going with yellow cuffs etc as the Duke of Argyll coat of arms has yellow (and black and white) and also the later Argyll Highlanders wore yellow facings. Definitely not a clincher as far as proof goes but, better than nothing at all :-)
