Dutch flags

Post by Eagleoftheninth » Wed Apr 25, 2012 11:05 am

Having trouble finding flags for my Grand Alliance Dutch troops; anyone have any suggestions which don't involve making my own?! I got a couple from Flag Dude; they are lovely flags but a bit smaller than I'd like- I'd prefer to have the bigger flags which seem to have been popular in the late C17th. Tried asking Reiver/UndertheBed but they've no plans to release any.
Cheers

Andy,

If the flags are to small for your liking ask Rick aka. Flagdude and tell him the size in which you like to get the flags and he will do so.

Hope that helps

Flags of War has some, and he'll size them however you'd like:

Theo,

Possibly: yes. At the moment, Motorway and myself are analysing the colours system used by the only other Dutch multi-battalion (elite) regiment at the time, Nassau-Friesland. Based on the research by Dr. de Wilde, Jean Belaubre and Hoynck van Papendrecht, it seems that the second battalion carried a less ornate / elaborate colour than the first battalion, designating its lesser status. The same principle MAY have been used by the Garde te Voet battalions.

BTW, although lovely made, the Nassau-Friesland colours provided by Flags of War are incorrect.

Because this pattern was attributed to this regiment by Sapherson in his famous booklet.
BTW, am I right that correct Nassau Friesland flag is like in attachement ?

Maciek,

Indeed, this is a very sketchy representation of one of the Nassau-Friesland (1st battalion) colours lost at Fleurus in 1690 (HCPN = Hendrik Casimir Prince of Nassau). The Nassau-Friesland colours provided by Flags of War are misinterpreted / miscopied versions of what MAY have been the Nassau-Friesland 2nd battalion colours (sometimes attributed to regiment Aylva). Wow !
So yellow/blue flag could be the colour of second battalion of regiment Nassau Friesland ?
Is this what you and Motorway found about flags of this regiment ?
Sounds groundbreaking !

The suggestion has been made by Dr. de Wilde in the 1970's. We know from some documents in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris that Nassau-Friesland carried yellow-blue colours in the 1670's. We are now trying to establish a sound verdict, based on primary sources.

Here's the complete version Ray. Mind you: this is a copy of a copy from an unverified source (Robitscheck).
