British and French Grenadiers During WSS,Lace yes or no

Post by eboracomb » Wed Feb 06, 2013 8:24 am

I'm trying to find out if British and French Grenadiers had lace on their uniforms during the WSS and was hoping a few of the August members of the forum might be able to shed more light on the subject,at the moment after my research I am of the opinion that most of the British regiments grenadiers had lace at this time and most of the French did not,is this a fair assesment or is it a more complex matter than that, any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers Nick

Most French grenadiers didn't have lace on the coat. Unfortunately most figure manufacturers based their grenadier on one from a regiment that had lace on the coat,
Best wishes,
Simon

thank's Ray and Simon for the input,it would seem to me that French grenadiers with no lace would be in order.

Hi Nick.

Yes, they shouldn't have lace unless they belong to a unit whose fusiliers wore buttonhole lace already, such as the Gardes Françaises or Du Roi, and this practice remained consistent throughout Louis XIV's reign. Not much to add to the stuff I already posted on the thread Ray mentioned :

Re the English and Scots grenadiers, it appears to have been standard practice to have their coats ornamented with extra lace, but I'm less familiar with the primary sources there.

By all means do so :D

Another useful addition would be marching French infantry with separate heads, as there are only two variants in the range at the moment. I imagine Paul would not even have to create new sculpts : the existing two poses with separate heads would do just fine and allow for more variety within a unit.

More poses based on the existing dollies would also be welcome for the French : the musketeer advancing at porte would be ideal for more agressive-looking advancing units, for instance.

I have yet to get to the advancing battalions, but I have at least just placed an order for a French firing line battalion, so am awaiting further developments - and additions to the range ! - with considerable interest 8)

This is pretty much along the lines I was thinking,I also thought of adding - headed and figures with bandaged heads for an option to add variety.
thanks all for your thoughts Nick
