information on Portuguese regiments

Post by wdrenth » Sun Apr 14, 2013 3:47 pm

dear all,

I am looking for detailed information on Portuguese regiments during the War of the Spanish Succession. I am in possession of Pat Condray's booklet from Editions Brokaw from 1992, but that doesn't provide the information I am looking for.

What I am looking for are basically, short, regimental histories and lineages of Portuguese regiments: when raised, who were the colonels / proprietors, a succession of colonels, etc.

I search, part of, the internet, but interest in the Portuguese army seems to start only at a much later date.

Any help and suggestions for reading will by highly appreciated.

cheers,
Wienand

You are a bit early, the University of Lisbon is just setting up a project about the WSS and the Portugese:

http://guerradasucessao.weebly.com/index.html

One of their targets is "to set up a catalogue of names of Portugese soldiers that had a role in the WSS".

This booklet has details on both parts of the army in 1710 - http://www.caliverbooks.com/bookview.ph ... ubcatno=27

@Motorway
Thank you for the link. Looks like an interesting project, and hope they will include more than just a database of names. I have seen similar projects on the www, and sometimes they tend to focus on names only and provide little context.

@karamustafapasha
Thank you for the book title.

The book by Mr Dorrel although well written, full of informations and wargaming-oriented doesn't have the details wdrenth is looking for.

All,
Whilst exploring other sources for information on Portuguese regiments, this seems to be really a tough nut to crack and the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 will not have helped, I have obtained a copy of Dorrel's book on the campaign in Spain in 1710.

As Maciek wrote, this book is pretty well written and contains many orders of battle alongside other bits an pieces. Most is indeed tailored for the wargamer, and not so much for regimental aficionados like me. Though, the narrative on the 1710 campaign is well researched from the various sources available.

On the downside, the book is a bit expensive in my opinion. Also, the text does not have any notes or any hints on sources used. Though there is a short bibliography, I always like to see citations with the source of details presented, as in tables for example.

cheers,

Hi,

Even in Portugal the information is hard to find but I have some stuff that may be helpful. The texts I have need to be translated and I don't have the time to do it. I can upload scans if anyone is interested.

Most infantry uniforms were a very light grey. There are brief accounts of uniform colours being used like light-grey and red, dark-blue and red, Light-blue and white, and green and yellow (Marines).

A couple of plates depicting a captain of the Marines and units during thew Almansa battle. The brown uniform was local made and used in Spain by one of the Chaves regiments.

Great information and well timed - I am painting a 'British' army for Spain at the moment :)

I would be interested in your scans and indeed any more pictures you have.

Thanks

@Kingscarbine
Thank you for very informative posts.
If you find more about this fascinating but obscure army (cavalry uniforms and flags), please share it with us.
