When did the Polish discard their axes?

Post by MNFS » Mon Sep 23, 2013 5:04 pm

Hi All,

Just a quick question, does anyone know when the Polish musket infantry discarded their axes?

Best,

My mate says that they didn't go for certain until 1717 - there was a big reorganization then. But they were probably gone before this.

They had them at the start of the Ottoman war in the 1680's but may have started getting rid of them during the later stages of this war. Nothing is really known about what they did in the GNW because Polish infantry is rare then. My friend says it is likely that the switch would have started in 1697 (when they had a new king) at the latest and finished in the early stages of this war, if not before. But he says this is just a guess.

I hope that helps.

Michał Paradowski ( http://kadrinazi.blogspot.com )
says that the exact date is hard to find, because first official document not mentioning axes was issued in 1717. Some Polish historians assume that axes were gradually discarded with adoption of flintlocks. Personally, I wouldn't give axes to Polish infantry in GNW.

BTW, does anyone have information about the Curland regiments in Dutch service during the Franco-Dutch war?
