Siege Warfare

Post by kingscarbine » Wed Oct 09, 2013 2:21 pm

Hi,

From what I'm reading of the Franco-Dutch War most engagements were siege operations or related to them. How do you game sieges? Are there any particular rules for this type of warfare?

Have a look for Charles Grant's latest book which is all about wargaming sieges and follows his campaign. I would think it's probably available from Caliver Books. I have normally just gamed sections of sieges, storming defences, sallies from the garrison to disrupt the attackers, raiding the attackers supply convoys and relief forces attempting to break the siege.

I don't think this is quite true in my humble opinion.

Sieges were an important part of the war but In the four northern Provinces there was an all out war on the Frisian Water defense line in 1672 and early 1673 against the French and the Munster troops, with battles in Aduarderzijl, Winschoten, Ulsda and later a raid into Germany to name a few.

From 1673 the focus shifted south resulting into the big battles of Seneffe, Cassel and St-Denis. (Not the mention the French-Brandenburg battles).

The siege of Grave was a war on it's own in the larger Nijmegen/Upper Meuse area.

Thanks both. I'm quite new to the period so any information is welcome. Don't know much about the Frisian Water defence line and the German front but I'm glad there are more possible scenarios to game.

Thanks for posting the link Ben, it is an excellent book and offers lots of ideas for covering all aspects of siege warfare.

I'll have to do a bit of research to see how much siege warfare changed in a hundred years but these rules could work with some changes: http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/sfsiege.html

Eric Burgess is playtesting a rules set that looks very interesting. The time period is 1680-1815 but I think they can be used for the 1660-1670's. http://dinofbattle.blogspot.co.uk/searc ... 27s%20Wars

BTW I'm looking for images of sappers and miners.
