Polish infantry of the GNW

Post by veryangryowl » Thu Jun 04, 2015 8:00 pm

Hello
Im trying to find out about the uniforms worn by the Polish infantry in the GNW. Would they have worn tricornes/western clothing and what colours would they be? Im guessing probably red like the Saxons (being a dual monarchy) maybe they copied them?

thanks:)

The Polish Foot Guards (who may or may not have been Polish) were dressed in Western clothing, like the rest of the Saxon army, and for all intents an purposes were part of the Saxon infantry. I don't know if any other Polish infantry fought in the field. At Klizsow, Warsaw, and Kalisch, it looks like only cavalry were present.

If you can, get a copy of "The Great northern War, part 2, Sweden's allies and enemies" from acedia press.

This states that the Polish guard had Red coat's with white Cuff's and vests, also gives cavalry regiments raised in Poland having Red coats
hope this helps

I am working on a Polish army after taking part in this game - http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/im ... ffield.htm

I am asked about the infantry and you can forget the 'Polish Guard' unit. This is a unit of the Saxon army - like the Swiss Guards or Irish units in the French army. The real Polish guard is called the Gwardii Krolewski.

On uniforms basically no one knows what the Polish infantry looked like. They could of been wearing 'Eastern' style uniforms like on the page linked to above -http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C18/faq.htm. The Russians were wearing similar styled uniforms until at least 1703.

Some of them might be wearing green or red but that doesn't seem to be certain. After the GNW was over the army was 'reformed' and they were in red coats like the Saxons.

As already mentioned Polish infantry was pretty rare. Often there were none in the armies and the most in one army was 3 small units.

I hope this helps

I agree.
They could of been wearing 'Eastern' style uniforms like on the page linked to above -http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/C18/faq.htm.
There are some theories that they could also wear western style uniforms with Polish style fur caps, as dragoon shown in linked page.
