I have just finished a book I picked up in a charity shope about Sir Richard Holmes:
I hadn't heard of him, so his career from a young cavalier officer up to the invasion of 1688 was fascinating to me. Although mainly a naval officer there is plenty of inspiration in the events he was involved in, for many a BLB or Donnybrook scenario. There were a number of expeditions to West Africa with actions teetering between trading and piracy that may have been part of the case of the Anglo Dutch Wars (which he was also heavily involved in.)
During the Second Dutch war Holmes led a raid on a Dutch harbour that resulted in the loss of a huge amount of shipping and stores for almost no loss to the English. Ended his career as governor of the Isle of Wight and was still very active in raising troops and commanding fortifications against various invasion threats (Williamite and Jacobite) right up to 1692.
