White coated, white hatted Hanoverian cavalry

Post by Gunfreak » Tue Jun 13, 2017 8:38 pm

There is a picture of them in the great northern war compendium. They look awesome. But how far into the WSS could I use them. I assume once they moved to the tricorne. They would use boring old black ones?

A review Robert Hall's CD shows that every picture depicting cavalry after 1700 shows a black tricorne. A few show tricornes in the 1690. All of the "round" brimmed hats in the 1690s are black. There a cream colored hats in the 1670s and 1680s.

The compendium claims the cavalry kept the brimmed hats until 1705 but does not make clear who and when they used white hats.

As much as I like the Compendium, I would go with Hall on this question. Hall's latest CD is based on a lot of new research. Twenty-five years ago secondary sources indicated that white hats were worn until at least 1705, but I'm not sure if that is correct.

Yeah I too would generally agree with Hall being the best. And would trust that over the compendium.
