17th Century Naval Games

Post by Adam Hayes » Mon Dec 30, 2019 12:54 pm

Inspired by Barry's current naval project I have started to put together some ship models that will allow me to tinker with this period.

Not sure what rules to try for this sort of period and level of game. Any suggestions happily reveived.

Looks like a nice start.
Did you try out Barry Source Rules? Here is a link to it.

Yes thanks. Looking at them they are more for larger scale games but I will give them a go for my 5th Rates and smaller games. I also have Galleys and Galleons by Ganesha Games that look interesting and maybe aimed more at small actions with a few ships rather than fleets.

I searched my link library and found this ->

http://www.navalwargamessociety.org/rulesonline.html

or

http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/request.html --> scroll down to SPANISH FURY

click on the picture of Spanish Fury - Sail

Eventually you find there suitable small engagement Rules. :)

I tried out Galleys and Galleons last week. Seems quite a neat set of rules. Not too complex, minimal book-keeping and with some subtleties to make it a tactical challenge. Eminently tweakable as well, so that I can include the elements that I think embody the period.

I'm already finding I can lose a single ship REALLY quickly!

Have blogged it now Adam, run same scenario twice. 40 minute game x 2 works well. Next I'll introduce my notorious cards....

I saw the first blog post, tried to leave a a comment but it doesn't let me (probably quite a good policy!*) Looked like a really good way to include the influence of characters. It does seem like a period when captains and admirals were important and often in the thick of the action. The frequent high casualty count also showed up how important their presence was once they were hors de combat. Looking forward to reading the second run through.

(*I don't think Clarence has forgiven yet me for the Battle of Drax. :D )

Could be a case with Browser Pop up Blocker. Might be no harm if you check this in your Browser.

If I knew what a browser was and where to find it? I would try that but it seems strange that I can post here without any problems.

Near the top right corner of my Internet window I have a button with a hand on it (like the Red Hand of Ulster but reveresed colours.) When I click on it one of the menu of options is to "Pause Adblock". Choosing that suddenly allowed me to post on the blog. (And as you can see above Barry is getting nervous about the idea!)
