Barry, tempted by your experiences to have a go.
Uncertain about basing - so many people base 28mm figures individually.
(This would also allow flexibility to use other rule systems). Could you do this and just move them in groups of five, or, I have found a five figure base 90mm x 50mm looks pretty good.
How far would either approach disrupt the game mechanics do you think?

I don't think it would disrupt the game mechanix in any way whatsoever. I would suggest trying the single basing method first for a variety of reasons not the least being that if you don't like FoW for 28s then absolutely no harm done. I chose the multi base option because;

of aesthetics mostly
conforming to the rule norms of FoW (less brain work)
I am always nervous about single based figures getting damaged (chips etc)

If you like it you can always rebase permanently. Base shape doesn't matter for infantry teams as they have a 360 degree arc of fire.

Hi,
I've also came up with a way I can use single figures for 28mm FOW games.

All the figs are on steel washers so I've bought some of the large magnetic bases from BF. I can pop the figures on these for FOW and off again for other rules. If I get time I'm going to try and add some filler to them and make them look a bit better.

Barry does one have to have the two bases per squad ie two fire teams - or could one rationalise it down to one? You seem to have gone away from the 1:1 figure ratio already. Maybe a para or two in warchest on how you set about it might be helpful. yes, i know, add that job to the list.

In the meantime some further thoughts;

The basis of FoW organisation for infantry is 2 x figure bases = section (somewhere between 7-10 men).

Most armies is WW2 operated understrength therefore no great deviation to have 28mm figures based on two bases 4+4 or 4+3. Crowding on another figure per base may destroy the aesthetics a little and make them look too busy(could be ok for such as Soviet conscripts). I haven't really deviated from the 1:1 ratio (just assumed some battle losses!).

As for using one base only I don't see much of a problem as long as both sides conform.

I know you used the large FOW bases for your infantry stands but did you use anything different for the platoon HQ?

Eh seing this topic has some history (given the dating of the posts) I am actually wondering if anyone has done anything with the 28mm FOW idea ????

I have seen some 20mm FOW efforts seen here and there (WHC for one) and at least one link to 28mm FOW (Lonely Wargamers blog) but curious as towards Barry's progress (or no progress as might be the case).

I played several games using this configuration for 28s. In fact, all of my Poles,Russians and Germans are still based this way for FOW in 28. It works and you just need be careful on force and table sizes... try it!

So what would be wise playing on a regular 6x4 gaming table in 28mm with FOW in mind ?

Also Barry what size basing have you used ?
(probably vehicles left unbased ?)
