I wonder if this was an electrical fire. The overall state of the electrics at the Airlie was not good as anyone who has been in the balcony area will confirm.

On the negative side this fire may impact our timetable for future games, on the positive side we may end up with an improved Airlie.

Thankfully no one appears to have been hurt. I suspect the insurance people will take their time over the cause of this fire, especially as the Airlie wasn't in the best of financial shape.

Too true Peter, these things do tend to rumble on! And while it is closed, no business coming through the door :!:

Martin, thanks for posting this, it would probably be next year before Dale got around to informing everyone of the bad news. This news is bad enough for the guys of the LoGW as we had games scheduled into 2010 but it is terrible news for Lyn and her staff. Fortunately no one was injured in the fire.

Cheers

That's ghastly. As soon as someone learns more, please post the skinny.

It sounds like someone forgot to pay Dale his protection money...

It would be prudent for us to explore an alternative now as opposed to waiting particularly in light of the unconfirmed news about the Heugh.
I am away at the mo but if you like will contact Dale when I get back unless anyine has already done so.

From the pictures it looks like the restaurant was gutted, and it spread up to the triple room where Colin, Dave & I stayed last time. According to my Mum (who heard it on the news) it was indeed an electrical problem that started it all, and the paper claimed it began in a basement.

So far the local separatists haven't claimed responsibility. I wonder if Dale has an alibi?

This is from the Airlie's own website:
In our popular public bar we have a "snug", very cosy and ideal for a quiet lunchtime snack or meal. This area is also perfect for a drink on a cold winters day - why not have a dram or two by the fire?

Just back from Elgin, and yes the restaurant is a gonner !

I shall get on the drums and contact Mr Smith forthwith.

One possible alternative venue is the Guide Hall where KWC meet - its big enough, level access, kitchen. One up for discussion.

One to B -cheers mate !!!!

Bob, old chap,

What about Dykehead - now the Royal Jubilee Arms? Too far out of town?
I haven't been there since my grandparents' golden (?) wedding bash in the 70's, but as I recall it had the space, and would probably relish the off-season clientele. Besides, its only about five miles from Kirrie, heading north towards the glens.

Other possibilities would be somewhere in the Perth or Dundee hinterland, Any ideas, people?
