The Period 1660-1721, She who must be obeyed and a 6x4 Table

Post by Captain of Dragoons » Sun Jan 06, 2013 4:04 pm

Gentlemen,

This past summer I moved into a new house after changing locations with the CF. I thought I had negotiated with She who must be Obey the bigger spare room, however I was mistaken  . I have the smaller room.

Now, after completing the recce, between my reading chair, display cabinet(s), book case (future cases) I will have room for a 6'x4' Table

This what I am thinking  , even with a 6'x4' table I can still do a Oldbridge or an Yellow Ford scenario at the Boyne. Perhaps Sedgemoor or a Glorious Revolution action. The Church and Gate at Walcourt, the cavalry/rearguard action at Leuze. Or maybe even a Poltava style scenario with the Swedes advancing up the table against Russian redoubts.

Thoughts and suggestions on a 6'x4' table :?:

I want to use 25/28mm figures.

cheers

First thing, buy a guard dog/cat to protect your little room from wife's forays to store her rubbish.

Second task, buy 1:1 scale army to help you claim the bigger room you had initially negotiated.

Hope this helps,

Mark :)

Do you have any Mob connections locally?

Edward,

A lot can be done with a solid six foot by four foot table if it is well-made and has detachable legs...

1:1 would work for French & Indian War skirmishing (The Battle on Snow Shoes, anyone).

As for BLB2 in North America I always fancy a refight of the Beauport Shore.

Figure on the French Side a battalion of Quebec Militia, ad hoc battalion of Compagnies Franches de la Marine and a couple of Native War Parties with coureur de bois, throw in a galloping gun. For the English a couple battalions of New England Militia and a Regiment of Marines.

Or my own favourite, D'Iberville's campaign on the Avalon, in Newfoundland. Where I was born and grew up.

Killiecrankie may work on a 6x4 or 6x5 table to, I'm thinking.

Can I make a 6x5, work  , Mite be cramp.

Many of my earlier games were on 6 x 4. You will be fine with it. Just don't overdo the Horse and guns.

My default table is 6x4'. I can adapt it to 8x4' or set up a larger table in the garage, but I don't often bother. Barry mentioned you should limit cavalry and artillery in your games. Here are a few more suggestions...

1. Play meeting engagements where troops march onto the table rather than simply line up. They need not be in column of march, but can move on in line. This turns the the entire four foot width into the battle ground and gives the illusion of a wider table. Attacking a static defense also works fairly well, with the defenders in place and the attackers marching on.
2. Play escalating engagements where only small armies are deployed initially and reinforcements march on.
3. Play down the six foot length of the board and focus on a particular aspect of a battle rather than the whole - for instance the attack on Old Bridge proper rather than the whole Boyne crossing. You can make a mini-campaign by breaking a battle into three parts - left, right, and center - then constructing a fourth game based on the outcomes from these.

Both R2E and BLB work fine on a 6x4' table...

Actually, a more serious solution is the attic if it is floored. That's where I do my painting and gaming since my "study" is too small.
6x4 should be ok for a lot of games anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks,

Clarence, I like your idea about breaking the Boyne down into parts  , I was thinking along similar lines.

Another battle I think that can work to is earlier in the period: Seneffe!
