I have always thought that it was two battalions of Gardes de Voet in Ireland. One with a company of officer cadets and one with a company of grenadiers. Wasn't the other battalion in London with a company of some sort of lifeguards attached instead of grenadiers or cadets?
That's what I've read!

I have multiple sources as well that estimate the Dutch Guard as 1900+ at the Boyne, but Sapherson estimates them at 1200...

1900 would mean 3 Battalions I would guess & 1200 2 Battalions given battalions seem to be 5-600 strong at this time.

Confusing, I did see some one cite a source on this forum saying that one Battalion was defiantly in London during the campaign.

Really for my collection, it may not matter - I'm not trying to get EVERY unit. My Danish brigade is going to be 4 of the 8 units present so 2 battalions is probably enough, at least initially, but it would be nice to come up with a definite answer.

I tend to trust Mats and Rebel because I think both have had access to primary sources...

Gentlemen,
I'm sorry to reopen an old wound and appear as stupid as I obviously am, but I am going to start a Jacobite army.
I want to start with a French unit, can I use flintlock troops or should I wait for matchlock troops for the other units?
Nextly, I assume that the French infantry would have pikemen?
Finally I shall be using Warfare figures, but I'm not keen on the command figs. Can anybody reccomend compatible figures? Please pm me any answers as I think it wrong to mention another companies figures on a website.

Thanks in advance,
Dave.

Gents,
I dug up this post from the basement, in hopes to get some clarification or to see what others are doing for their Jacobite army. I'm wrapping up my Jacobite army, and looking for unit strength for James II Lifeguards of horse...in gaming terms, how many stands of troopers? Plus, what troops (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Horse Grenadiers), were available to James II?

Thanks a bunch.

There were two troops, but these were each roughly the size of a BLB squadron... By 1690, I believe these would simply be the 1st and 2nd Troops. There has also been mention of a troop of horse grenadiers with the Life Guard, but it is unclear how large this unit was.

I'm just planning on twelve models...

Clarence,
I was thinking the same thing as far as two squadron for BLB and maybe one stand of the Horse Grenadiers.

So far I have painted:

1 French Foot unit - currently flagged as Piemont but I will change the command stand and use it for Ireland (maybe even as Huguenots if I drop the pikes)

Hello,
Piedmonteses and Scots together? Strong! :D
Yes, since I am a piedmontese, I would say that they are doing well there.
The name "Piedmont" comes from "at the foot ("pie") of the mountains ("mont")" and the name of our city, Torino (Turin - Augusta Taurinorum) derives its name from the celtic-ligurian tribe of the Taurini, whose name derives from the Celtic "taur" that meant "mountain", then by Romans confused with "bull" for the Latin "taurus".
Originally, therefore, the Taurini, ancestral forefathers of the Piedmonteses, were the "men of the mountains", that is to say .... the "Highlanders"!
:D
Sorry for this digression, which I hope you liked it anyway and it has amused you.
Even I and my son Sandro (the infamous Naran Team Turin) are preparing a Jacobite army, to oppose the English, for which at the moment I'll use those of the Spanish Succession War, which I'm finishing to paint.
As soon as possible, I will post some pictures in the forum.
Cheers,
Sergio

And then we, Piedmonteses, we feel us "Celts", still today, even though for the truth, our Celtic ancestors were been a bit 'mixed":
first with the Ligurians and the Romans, then with Swedes (Goths and Longbards), and finally with the Germans (Francs).
But that's okay, not, we are "Europeans"!
